Group I is arguably the ‘Group of Death’ at the 2026 World Cup. 2018 winners France, 2025 Africa Cup of Nations victors Senegal and qualification goal machines Norway make up the bulk of the group. Good luck, Iraq.
2026 will mark Senegal’s fourth tournament appearance. They made the knockout stages at two of their previous three outings at football’s showpiece. There is an argument to be made that they’ll repeat their 2018 showing and endure a group stage exit. They’re at 7/5 to not qualify from their group in North America.
Of all the African nations to secure their place at the World Cup, Senegal arguably boast the best squad. Sadio Mane, Nicolas Jackson and Iliman Ndiaye, to name three, are all top-tier attackers for head coach Pape Thiaw.
However, they kick off their World Cup campaign with games against France and Norway. It’s an incredibly difficult start to the tournament for the defending AFCON champions. By the time their meeting with Iraq rolls around, they may already be on the cusp of an early World Cup exit.
It could be a short stay for the Lions of Teranga this summer.
