Haiti vs Scotland

Scott McTominay (Scotland) to score anytime

This is likely to be a popular entry in any bet builder feature published for Scotland’s opening Group C fixture against Haiti, though Scott McTominay is more than worthy of inclusion as an anytime goalscorer candidate on Sunday.

The attacking midfielder’s transformation from bit-part player at Man Utd to talisman and source of match-winning inspiration for both Napoli and Scotland over the past couple of years has been remarkable, and playing at the peak of his powers, McTominay could make a real splash at the World Cup.

The 29-year-old has notched a hugely impressive 14 goals in his last 33 outings for Scotland, many of which were clutch moments, including his spectacular overhead kick in the Scots’ World Cup qualification-clinching victory over Denmark in November last year.

McTominay’s ability to conjure up moments that matter on the biggest occasions makes him a docket-worthy option in the anytime scorer stakes here.

Recommended bet: Scott McTominay (Scotland) to score anytime

Australia vs Turkey

Kenan Yildiz (Turkey) to have over 0.5 shots on target

Real Madrid’s 20-year-old schemer Arda Guler tends to draw the most attention for Turkey, however, Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz, who is the same age as his teammate, is another starlet with the match-changing ability in the final third.

Yildiz was a regular starter for the Crescent Stars during their World Cup qualification run when he averaged 2.17 shots and 0.93 shots on target per 90 minutes. In fact, he actually outperformed Guler for total shots on target registered (6-3).

The wide attacker also enjoyed a double-figure goal campaign for Juventus in Serie A last term, so he won’t be short on confidence stateside. Adding Yildiz (over 0.5 shots on target) to our football bet builder feels like the right move here.

Recommended bet: Kenan Yildiz (Turkey) to have over 0.5 shots on target

Germany vs Curacao

Juninho Bacuna (Curacao) to concede over 1.5 fouls

Curacao will make history in Houston this weekend when they make their first-ever appearance at a World Cup Finals and the Blue Wave could have hardly been handed a tougher opening assignment.

The islanders will expect to see little of the ball against a possession-hungry German outfit and their players will need to put in hard yards and hard work to compete. Closing down space, making tackles and conceding fouls will be the order of the day, and tireless midfielder Juninho Bacuna can assist in all three directions.

The 28-year-old conceded 1.90 fouls per 90 minutes for his club Volendam last term and he tends to give away just as many free kicks for his country. Indeed, in Curacao’s World Cup warm-up defeat to Scotland last month, Bacuna was collared for a game-high three fouls.

Germany’s midfield is filled with string-pulling technicians, so expect Bacuna to be handed a remit of disruption and destruction in Houston. The former Birmingham City anchorman is fancied to beat a target of over 1.5 fouls at the NRG Stadium.

Recommended bet: Juninho Bacuna (Curacao) to concede over 1.5 fouls

Netherlands vs Japan

Virgil van Dijk (Netherlands) to concede over 0.5

Van Dijk isn’t quite as imperious as he once was and the 35-year-old travelled to this summer’s World Cup on the back of an awkward campaign for Liverpool. The veteran seems to be slowing down and has looked particularly vulnerable against nimble, quick forwards.

The centre-half looked particularly ropey at the back end of last season and conceded at least one foul in 11 of his final 14 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions. Van Dijk also averaged one foul per game across the Oranje’s World Cup qualifiers and he offers decent value to concede at least one free kick again on Sunday.

Against Japan, who have a very mobile front line, the regression in Van Dijk’s speed and reactions could be exposed, making him a prospect with potential in the over 0.5 fouls stakes in Arlington.

Recommended bet: Virgil van Dijk (Netherlands) to concede over 0.5 fouls
