For nations whose football sides are characterised as ‘Lions’, these two sides have failed to raise much of a roar at this World Cup.

Senegal and Iraq are both on zero points in Group I and know this is a must-win to stand any chance of progressing as one of the best eight third-placed teams, but even then they will need other results to go their way.

Senegal have conceded three goals in both games, losing 3-1 to France and 3-2 to Norway. The Lions of Teranga scored in the 90th minute each time, which suggests the closer margins could have flattered them.

Iraq have had similar results to Senegal, losing 4-1 to Norway and 3-0 to France. They have offered less threat, however, with only one shot on target in their two matches, compared with six for Senegal.

The Lions of Mesopotamia are still looking for a first point at the World Cup finals, this being their second tournament appearance.

Team news

A possible shake-up for Senegal is to deploy Sadio Mane as a substitute this time rather than a starter.

Aymen Hussein, Iraq’s emblematic striker and scorer of their only goal in the tournament, could be missing. He went off in the 26th minute of the France game with an apparent hamstring issue.

Prediction

The most relevant result in terms of this fixture could be Senegal’s 3-1 win over hosts Qatar at the 2022 World Cup.

That was their only previous finals match against a team from the same region as Iraq and the drop in class resulted in a comfortable victory.

With Ismaila Sarr in great form, there is nothing too much wrong with Senegal’s attack.

Clearly their defence is a weakness, although it is questionable how much that will be tested against these opponents.

Iraq have barely threatened to score and their threat will be reduced even further if Aymen Hussein is missing. That would leave Ali Al Hamadi as their only attacker of note.

Sarr to score is a good option. But it could be worth backing a Senegal win to nil, given that their defence should cope better with these lesser opponents compared to France and Norway.

Back Senegal to win to nil at 10/11 with LiveScore Bet.

Score prediction: Senegal 2-0 Iraq
