Scotland vs Brazil Match Preview

By Tom Hill

Scotland and Brazil will conclude their Group C campaigns on Wednesday when they meet at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

The two teams are separated by one point in their pool after contrasting results over the weekend. Scotland were beaten 1-0 by Morocco in Foxborough, while Brazil ran out 3-0 winners over Haiti in Philadelphia.

After wrestling their way to a 1-0 win over Haiti in their opening match, Scotland had hoped to secure a draw against Morocco, which would have given them four points. With eight of the third-placed teams advancing to the knockout stages, four points are likely to get Scotland through, but they may even advance on three.

The number of permutations makes it hard to work out what Scotland will require if they lose to Brazil. A heavy defeat is one thing they cannot afford, as goal difference could be crucial if they finish the group on three points and are competing with nations from other pools.

Steve Clarke's team made a slow start against Morocco, conceding after just 70 seconds. Ismael Saibari beat the offside trap to slot home, but to Scotland's credit, they rallied and threw what they had at Morocco, who were relieved to win 1-0 in the end.

Brazil were expected to outclass Haiti and a brace from Matheus Cunha and a strike from Vinicius Jr secured them a 3-0 win in Philadelphia. The Selecao still appear to be searching for their best form, but they are already on four points and will expect to make it seven on Wednesday.

Scotland had spells where they looked overwhelmed and without ideas against Morocco, but the Atlas Lions can be a little wasteful in attack, something Brazil do not struggle with. In the build-up to the World Cup, Brazil scored twice against Egypt, six times against Panama and put three past Croatia.

Tactically, Wednesday's battle promises to be fascinating as Scotland cannot afford to go toe-to-toe with Brazil, who should be able to pick them off on the counter-attack. However, the five-time winners play with fewer midfielders than Morocco, meaning Scotland should not find it so tough to compete in the middle of the park.

Against Morocco, Scotland refused to press and leave spaces, and apart from inside the first two minutes, the plan worked. They are likely to adopt similar tactics for their final group match, but unlike Morocco, Brazil can be vulnerable at the back. Carlo Ancelotti's team have won four of their last five games, but conceded in four of those encounters.

They have kept only three clean sheets in their last ten matches, and Scotland have the physicality to cause issues at set-pieces. The fact that Brazil failed to register a shot on target in the second half against Haiti proves they have work to do, but their strength in depth suggests they will be able to carve out a narrow win in Miami.
