Portugal vs DR Congo Prediction

Portugal have one of the most talented squads in the competition and their defence is as solid as their attack is exciting. They look capable of holding firm against a DR Congo side who tend to struggle in the final third.

Portugal vs DR Congo Match Preview

By Ian Wilkerson

Portugal head into this World Cup as the most likely winners who have never before got their hands on the trophy, and many fancy that Cristiano Ronaldo's swansong could end in glory.

For that to occur, a strong start against DR Congo is essential, even if a group that also contains Uzbekistan and Colombia looks relatively straightforward.

While Portugal have generally done well in the Euros, which they won in 2016, and head Stateside as the Nations League holders, they have not reached their potential at World Cups in the Ronaldo era and will still be feeling the disappointment of the 1-0 defeat they suffered to Morocco in the quarter-finals in Qatar four years ago.

That was a missed opportunity and the pressure will be on Martinez, too, as he really has to deliver following his inability to get the best out of Belgium's golden generation in his last job.

There is an abundance of talent in the squad and all the components appear to be working well, as emphasised by them suffering just two defeats in 20 games since they fell to France on penalties in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

The question seems to be whether DR Congo will be able to lay a finger on them and that looks unlikely as they are far from a free-scoring outfit.

Reaching their first World Cup has been a real slog as seven wins from ten games were not enough to see them past Senegal in their group.

Then came a playoff victory over Cameroon when a single goal in injury-time was enough to get the job done and they subsequently needed a penalty shootout to get past Nigeria after a goalless 120 minutes.

Those were impressive results but they needed extra-time to get past an average Jamaica side in the inter-confederation playoffs and have not looked strong up front, suggesting Portugal's superior defence should be able to keep them at bay.

Having said that, it looks unlikely that the fancied Europeans will be able to run away with things as 13 of DR Congo's last 16 games have featured fewer than three goals.

There is a lack of potency up front as the only time they have scored more than once in their last eight games was a 2-0 friendly victory over Bermuda and that can hardly be considered a glowing piece of form.

So don't expect them to find a way through the Portugal defence, but there may not be a host of goals at the other end either.

Apart from a 9-1 victory over Armenia in the final game of their qualifying campaign, Portugal have not scored more than twice in their last eight outings.

That means there could also be some value in backing a 2-0 victory for the title hopefuls, who notched twice in each of their three most recent friendlies.

Portugal vs DR Congo Best Bets

Portugal to win 2-0 — 24/5

Apart from a 9-1 win over Armenia in their final qualifier, Portugal have not scored more than twice in their last eight outings and notched twice in each of their three most recent friendlies.

Portugal to win to nil — 22/25

Roberto Martinez's side have lost only two of their 20 matches since Euro 2024, while DR Congo have struggled for potency up front, scoring more than once in just one of their last eight games.

Portugal vs DR Congo Player Picks

Bruno Fernandes to provide an assist — 43/20

The Manchester United midfielder is an assist machine and created a record 21 goals in the 2025-26 Premier League season. He should be at the centre of everything Portugal create.

Cederic Bakambu over 0.5 shots on target — 19/20

The DR Congo forward had his chances limited at Real Betis in the 2025-26 season but he had a shot on target in four of his five league starts for the Spanish outfit.

Cristiano Ronaldo over 5.5 shots — 11/10

Cristiano Ronaldo is never shy of having an effort at goal and he chalked up an average of 7.46 attempts per game during qualifying, so he has to be of interest in all shot markets.

Bernardo Silva to be shown a card — 19/4

Bernardo Silva's last season at Manchester City was not only characterised by his great skill but also the number of yellow cards he picked up, being cautioned 15 times.

Noah Sadiki over 1.5 fouls — 13/10

The DR Congo midfielder looks set to be at the heart of the action and after picking up nine bookings for Sunderland in last season's Premier League campaign, he could fall foul of the officials.
