Saturday evening will be hot and sticky in Miami but that should not dilute the drama in this World Cup quarter-final between two exceptional sides. After Group I wins over Iraq and Senegal, Norway rotated for their final pool match and lost to France, qualifying as runners-up. They have since beaten both Ivory Coast and Brazil 2-1, the latter especially impressive, as they dominated the Selecao. However, they have conceded in all five of their games, and this is also the country's first World Cup quarter-final. While Norway are making history, this is England's 11th last-eight tie, with several of their team having featured when they finished fourth in 2018 and lost at this stage to France four years ago. The Three Lions have also reached the finals of the last two European Championships and their knack of just doing enough, possibly born of tournament experience, has again been a theme of their campaign. Last Sunday's win over Mexico was an extraordinary performance, with the team playing with 10 men for much of the second half and defending magnificently. England are a 'moments team', coming good when it really matters and the hydration breaks are allowing them to focus on one quarter of the game at a time. Their experience is a real advantage and head coach Thomas Tuchel is also unbeaten in 13 competitive games since taking over last year. That run can be extended to 14 in Miami, but it will not be straightforward. While Norway have conceded in all five of their games, England, who did not concede in qualifying, have allowed goals in three World Cup fixtures and are vulnerable on the break. That will bring Erling Haaland into the game. The striker scored both goals against Brazil, taking his tally for this tournament to seven and his exploits for Manchester City mean he is well known to England's defenders. City colleague Marc Guehi will start for England, and could be joined by John Stones, who recently departed the Etihad. Stones' calm demeanour shone through at the Azteca after he came off the bench, while Ezri Konsa has generally played well but looked uncertain. Konsa could also switch to right-back depending on Reece James' fitness. Whichever way Tuchel sets up, Haaland's mood makes him almost unstoppable, but so is Jude Bellingham, who has belied a poor season for Real Madrid to excel for England. Bellingham scored the first two goals in Mexico City to take his tally for this World Cup to four. The 23-year-old has also supplied an assist and he can play a leading role in another epic England win.
Norway vs England Team news
Stale Solbakken says right-back Julian Ryerson will 'look even better’ after returning to the team and playing 63 minutes of the win over Brazil following a hamstring injury.
Jarrell Quansah is suspended after his red card against Mexico, but the England medical team are believed to be confident that Reece James will be fit to feature following a hamstring issue.
If James is not fit, Djed Spence could start at right-back, or Ezri Konsa could move across and John Stones slot into central defence to face former Manchester City colleague Erling Haaland.
