Germany v Paraguay match preview: South Americans could be outclassed
It was mission accomplished for Germany in Group E — but Julian Nagelsmann will know that his team need to step it up ahead of the knockout rounds.
The Germans finished top of the section on six points but they finished level with the Ivory Coast after a shock 2-1 defeat to Ecuador in their final group game. Defeat to La Tri was Germany's first in 11 games, although they went into the game knowing they had already won the group, so it is unfair to judge them too harshly, but it will give their round-of-32 opponents, Paraguay, a glimmer of hope.
While Germany advanced as group winners, Paraguay did just enough to finish third in Group D. They started the tournament with a 4-1 hiding to the USA but quickly dusted themselves down to beat Turkey 1-0 in Santa Clara, a result which set things up nicely for them to progress.
Their subsequent goalless draw with Australia was not one for the purists but it ensured both teams advanced to the next round. The South Americans will need to be far better if they want to compete with Nagelsmann's side, though.
Defensive excellence formed the cornerstone of Paraguay's qualifying campaign — they conceded only ten goals in 18 qualifiers and only Ecuador had a better goals-against tally. But that all went out of the window against Mauricio Pochettino's USA at SoFi Stadium and they haven't looked the most assured at the back in their subsequent matches, even if those have resulted in clean sheets.
It would be unwise to read too much into Germany's defeat to Ecuador. Nagelsmann used the fixture as a chance to experiment and while he would have been disappointed with his team's second-half display, there is every chance he was already thinking ahead to the round of 32. Germany dispatched Curacao 7-1 in Houston before Deniz Undav's stoppage-time winner handed them a crucial victory over the Ivory Coast in their second match.
Nagelsmann's free-flowing approach has helped his side score 38 goals in their last 12 internationals and they should be able to carve out multiple opportunities against Paraguay. Another positive for Nagelsmann is that his side have not had to rely on one player to do the damage in the final third.
Seven of Germany's squad have scored at the finals and Undav is their top scorer with three goals, despite starting all of their group games on the bench and playing just 89 minutes at the tournament to date. The Germans have been slightly less effective at the back and Manuel Neuer, in particular, had a couple of nervy moments against Ecuador.
Germany have kept one clean sheet in 2026 which should give some hope to Paraguay, who have scored in seven of their last eight matches. However, Gustavo Alfaro's side have not found the net more than once in six matches and scored only 14 goals in South American qualifying.
In their three games in Group D, Paraguay had a smaller share of possession on each occasion and they have registered only five shots on target at the finals. Turkey had 32 shots in their 1-0 defeat to Paraguay and if Germany are given the same freedom, it could be one-way traffic from the off in Boston.
