Paraguay v France preview: No stopping formidable French

While much of the talk has been around Lionel Messi’s brilliant performances for Argentina, no team have lit up the World Cup more than France and Les Bleus should have few problems continuing their serene progress when they take on Paraguay in the last 16.
The South Americans have made headlines of their own with a deserved victory over Germany to help them progress to this stage. They needed penalties to do it as their opponents uncharacteristically made a complete mess of the shootout and they have scrapped their way to this point in the tournament, having fallen to a 4-1 defeat to co-hosts the USA in their first game.
That was followed by a 1-0 win over Turkey when they were forced to play without playmaker Manuel Almiron for a whole half after he was sent off, and a convenient goalless draw with Australia took both teams through. There was lots of fight against Germany and the game became ill-tempered at times, and while their endeavours probably justified their progress, they did benefit from a questionable VAR call when it seemed Die Mannschaft had scored a legitimate winner.
The problem now is there is no place for them to hide against the team of the tournament. France set their stall out when they secured a 3-1 success over Senegal and followed that up with a comfortable 3-0 win against Iraq. They perhaps benefited from the fact Norway made significant changes for their final group game, a decision that included leaving star striker Erling Haaland on the bench, but that did not stop Les Bleus steamrolling them in a 4-1 success.
Norway’s Scandinavian neighbours Sweden were then put to the sword in a 3-0 victory at MetLife Stadium and the margin of victory could have been even greater as both Kylian Mbappe, who took his tournament tally to six goals, and Michael Olise hit the post before the interval.
That was the eighth occasion in their last ten matches that France have scored at least three goals and Deschamps has such an embarrassment of riches at his disposal that there seems no let-up in sight. It is getting to the stage where even the supporting cast are hoping to get in on the act and force their way into the outgoing manager’s plans, and that can only be bad news for the Paraguayans, who look to be coming to the end of the road.
Not surprisingly, France are a short price to get the job done in Philadelphia, but a better course of action could be to back them to score at least three goals as it is difficult to see their South American opponents stemming the tide. Olise’s overhead kick that hit the post against Sweden was one of the moments of the tournament and while the Bayern Munich man has been unable to find the net so far, an opening goal may not be far away. He leads the tournament assist charts with five, but he has also had 14 attempts at goal in his four appearances and this could be the occasion when he breaks his duck.
