Ghana vs Panama

This is a first opportunity to see two of England's rivals in Group L as Ghana lock horns with Panama at BMO Field in Toronto, and the African nation should have plenty to celebrate.

Ghana cruised through qualifying, taking 25 points from a possible 30, and April’s appointment of experienced head coach Carlos Queiroz is a signal of intent.

Athletic Bilbao’s Inaki Williams and Manchester City hotshot Antoine Semenyo provide them with real star quality and there are plenty of other players in the squad who ply their trade in one of Europe’s elite divisions.

Panama made their World Cup debut in Russia in 2018 and were dealt a harsh reality check, losing all three games and conceding 11 goals along the way.

Panama were beaten 6-2 by Brazil in a friendly in May, were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa in March, and they are an ageing side that may struggle in the heat.

The concern surrounding Thomas Christiansen’s side would be the absence of an elite level striker and a lot depends on the influence of Ismael Diaz.

Even a decent performance from Diaz is unlikely to see them stop Ghana, however, so side with the Black Stars in this clash.

Columbia vs Uzbekistan

Colombia have been handed what appears to be a soft opening to their World Cup bid against tournament debutants Uzbekistan at the Azteca in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Colombia have kept just one clean sheet in their last four games, against a Jordan side ranked 63rd in the world, while their tally of 18 goals against in qualifying was the worst of the six South American nations to secure automatic passage to the tournament.

The White Wolves have scored at least once in 12 of their last 15 matches, a sequence that includes matches against the Netherlands, Egypt and Uruguay, so they clearly have talent in the final third and can cause Colombia problems.

But keeping clean sheets is also an issue for Uzbekistan, who have recorded just one in their last six games, and they will find it tough to stop Colombia's vibrant attack. There are plenty of viable options in the goalscorer markets and Luis Suarez looks capable of opening his tournament account on his World Cup bow.

The 28-year-old scored 34 goals for Sporting this season, netting in each of his last four appearances for the Lisbon giants, and, alongside Bayern star Diaz, he is Colombia's most potent attacking option.
