Mexico vs South Africa match preview
Remarkably, this is the second time these two nations have met in a World Cup opening fixture. Back in 2010, Siphiwe Tshabalala's iconic strike put South Africa ahead before Rafael Marquez pulled Mexico level in a 1-1 draw at Soccer City in Johannesburg.
For Bafana Bafana, Thursday's match represents a long-awaited return to the world stage. South Africa have not appeared at a World Cup since that home tournament 16 years ago, and this is only the second time they have qualified since 2002.
Mexico need no such introduction. The co-hosts are World Cup regulars, though their record at the tournament has been a source of frustration - they fell at the last 16 stage at seven consecutive tournaments between 1994 and 2018, before suffering the indignity of a group stage exit in Qatar four years ago.
Javier Aguirre takes charge of proceedings, returning for a third stint as Mexico manager following his appointment in 2024.
