England World Cup Squad News: Why goal machine Gibbs-White was worthy of wildcard call-up

Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad isn’t short on controversy – and Morgan Gibbs-White’s omission is proving particularly divisive.

The Nottingham Forest attacker failed to make the cut for this summer’s tournament, alongside a host of other high profile Premier League stars like Harry Maguire, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden.

But while plenty of players can feel aggrieved at not being among the 26 names heading to the USA, Canada and Mexico, few can point to the sheer output that Gibbs-White has produced for his club side this season.

As the fallout continues from Tuchel’s somewhat surprising selections, we consider whether Forest’s main man should be heading stateside next month.

The state of play

There can be no denying that competition for attacking berths in this England squad is particularly fierce.

Gibbs-White has primarily operated in the No.10 role for Nottingham Forest during 2025/26 and Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze have been selected ahead of him by Tuchel – a trio of undeniable quality.

The Stafford native offers a degree of versatility, however, having dropped deeper on occasion this term, as well as playing out wide on the left in his previous three starts.

A strong argument for Gibbs-White’s inclusion lies in the potential for him to be a multi-skilled wildcard, then, with his consistent record for delivering end product at the City Ground.

But the overall makeup of Tuchel’s squad presents a challenge, with the selection of five centre-backs leaving little room for additional attacking midfielders.

And it perhaps shouldn’t be too surprising that Gibbs-White wasn’t named on the German tactician’s list, after he didn’t receive a call-up for the 35-man England squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan back in March.

Goal machine

Nonetheless, Ivan Toney’s unexpected return to the England fold proves that World Cup squad selections cannot always be predicted based on previous camps.

So it is not unreasonable that Gibbs-White may have felt deserving of a call-up after his sublime form for Nottingham Forest this season.

In many ways the numbers speak for themselves – the six-cap international has scored 14 goals and contributed four assists across 36 Premier League matches, averaging an impressive 0.54 goal contributions per 90 minutes.

Only four top-flight players can better his goal return heading into Sunday’s final round of fixtures, and that’s before you even touch on his impact at continental level.

Gibbs-White registered a further three goals and three assists as Forest reached the Europa League semi-finals, all without even operating as an out-and-out striker.

Crunching the numbers

The top-line numbers behind Gibbs-White’s season arguably don’t do him justice.

If we compare him to fellow Premier League players Rogers and Eze – and look exclusively at the data from that competition – the case for his inclusion is only strengthened.

Gibbs-White has consistently shown his ability to convert opportunities in the final third, scoring 0.24 big chances per 90 compared with just 0.08 and 0.1 for Rogers and Eze, respectively.

That’s reflected in a greater shooting accuracy of 38.75%, too, though admittedly that is only marginally ahead of Rogers’ 38.1%.

And the former Wolves man’s superior numbers also partially extend to chance creation. He has conjured the most chances overall of the trio (1.4 per 90) but has actually generated the fewest big chances – 0.15 per 90 vs Rogers’ 0.36 and Eze’s 0.19.

It’s a discrepancy that points to the difficulties of a direct comparison between players of differing profiles.

For example, the Aston Villa and Arsenal pair attempt and complete far more take-ons than Gibbs-White, but he comes out ahead of them when we look at passes attempted and completed into the final third.

But perhaps that is the point. The 26-year-old isn’t exactly the same player as the attacking midfielders currently in the squad, so would have provided Tuchel with a different weapon in his armoury.

Ultimately, the England manager will point to the need to construct a squad that works together in harmony – whether that is the right combinations of players and attributes or what they add to the dynamic off the pitch.

In that sense he is looking at things more holistically and will undoubtedly have good reasons for why Gibbs-White isn’t his preferred option.

It’s hard not to feel that it is a harsh call, though, after a stellar campaign from Forest’s top performer.
