Argentina vs Austria Match Preview
By James Milton
Lionel Messi inspired Argentina to a 3-0 opening win over Algeria but the World Cup holders face a tough Group J assignment against Austria on Monday.
Many people assumed Argentina's 2022 triumph in Qatar would be a fitting end to Messi's World Cup career. But the brilliant veteran overcame a hamstring strain to start the Albiceleste's opening game of 2026, becoming the first man to play at six different World Cups.
Messi produced another magical performance, scoring all three of his side's goals to draw level with Germany's Miroslav Klose as the leading scorer in the tournament's history. Argentina mustered only ten shots at goal against Algeria, however, and they look too short in the betting to take maximum points against Austria.
Lionel Scaloni's men came through World Cup qualifying in style, finishing nine points clear of second-placed Ecuador in the Conmebol competition. They conceded only ten goals in 18 matches and have maintained those excellent defensive standards in the build-up to the World Cup.
Argentina won all seven of their friendlies since securing their place at the finals, conceding only one goal. But those non-competitive fixtures came against modest opponents as they beat Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Angola, Mauritania, Zambia, Honduras and Iceland before the victory over Algeria.
Monday's opponents Austria should provide the world champions with a more serious test. They have won ten of their last 12 games and are worth backing to avoid defeat when they take on the group favourites in Arlington, Texas.
Coach Ralf Rangnick is a shrewd operator, although his side had to work harder than expected to see off Jordan on matchday one. Austria dominated possession but needed a 76th-minute own goal and a Marko Arnautovic penalty in the 11th minute of injury time to wrap up a 3-1 win.
That was their first victory at a World Cup since Italia 90 but Rangnick has an experienced core of players, including centre-back David Alaba and veteran striker Arnautovic, at his disposal. RB Leipzig teammates Xaver Schlager and Nicolas Seiwald add energy and bite to Austria's midfield while Bayern Munich's Konrad Laimer and Borussia Dortmund's Marcel Sabitzer are also Bundesliga stalwarts.
Rangnick will be wary of Argentina's attacking threat although Inter striker Lautaro Martinez had a quiet game against Algeria. Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez failed to have a shot after coming on for Martinez in the 55th minute and Austria, who have lost only two of their last 18 internationals, can stand firm in Dallas.
Bayern utility man Laimer is worth backing to pick up a card against the world champions. The 29-year-old was booked in each of his last four Bundesliga starts this season, when he was usually employed as a full-back by Bayern boss Vincent Kompany.
Laimer plays in an advanced midfield role for Austria but he cannot shirk his defensive duties against Messi's Argentina. He was cautioned three times in six league-phase appearances in the Champions League and was the only Austria player booked in their final World Cup qualifier against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
