A stunning 3-2 win over Mexico at their Azteca fortress has propelled England into the World Cup quarter-finals where they will play a similarly jubilant Norway, who beat five-time winners Brazil in the last 16.
The Norwegians certainly pose a threat and most of England’s players will know all about their biggest danger, Erling Haaland. The Manchester City forward has scored seven of his nation’s 12 goals at the tournament and keeping him quiet will prove difficult.
That said, the Three Lions have coped just fine while rarely keeping forwards quiet in their first five games, so perhaps Thomas Tuchel has another trick up his sleeve to negate the threat of Haaland and continue the job he was brought in to do.
The German was a controversial appointment for some England supporters but there is no denying he is laser-focused on winning this World Cup, making key tactical tweaks when required and taking risks his predecessors would not have dreamed of.
It is hard to envisage Gareth Southgate ever playing Declan Rice at right-back or making 19-year-old Nico O’Reilly a key part of everything from organising a defensive line to contributing in possession.
Admittedly, it has not always been pretty. England's goalless draw with Ghana and 2-0 win over Panama were sleep-inducing at times and it could be argued that they rode their luck against Mexico and DR Congo.
However, Tuchel is finding a way to win and that makes England a genuine contender to end 60 years of hurt.
It could be argued there is an overreliance on Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham to step up in big moments, but if they keep delivering, does it really matter?
Kane’s double rescued the Three Lions against DR Congo in the first knockout round before Bellingham matched his captain and put in one of the all-time best performances of any away player at the Azteca.
Two superstars are better than one, so Kane and Bellingham’s England get the nod over Haaland’s Norway, who are far more suspect at the back than the Mexico team Tuchel’s men put three past last time.
Injuries and suspensions leave an already weak England defence looking light ahead of a meeting with Haaland, so there is every chance Norway grab a consolation. However, that is only likely to bring up the scoring tally, not fire the Scandinavians into the semi-finals.
England conceded twice against Croatia and Mexico, making them hard to trust for a clean sheet given Haaland is supported by dangerous players such as Martin Odegaard, Antonio Nusa and Alexander Sorloth.
There is always the chance that everything finally clicks for Tuchel, though. Looking at the quality in the squad, England have the ability to blow anyone away, so siding with over 2.5 goals looks a smarter play than going with both teams to score.
That selection has landed in all five of Norway’s games at this World Cup, suggesting a manic Miami match is on the cards - one which England can prevail in and take one step closer to a second world title.
