Liverpool Transfer News: Yan Diomande Sends Message to Reds After Standout Ivory Coast Display

Here, they tell me he's about to sign with Liverpool!” Ivory Coast boss Emerse Fae was forced to respond to speculation surrounding the future of winger Yan Diomande following their 1-0 World Cup win over Ecuador in the early hours on Monday morning.
Amad Diallo scored the decisive goal in the dying embers in Philadelphia as the Elephants broke the South American powerhouse down. Diomande, though, caught the eye. Indeed, he completed more dribbles (4) and created more chances (5) in the Group E World Cup clash. No player made more tackles than the RB Leipzig star (5).
The 19-year-old has been heavily linked with a summer move following a breakout season with RB Leipzig. The German giants were demanding upwards of £100m in January. That asking price will only rise should Diomande continue to shine in North America. And it’s seemingly Liverpool that are the frontrunners for the teenager.
The Reds, after all, need a Mohamed Salah replacement. The Egyptian leaves after nine years at Anfield. Whoever replaces Salah has big boots to fill. Diomande, though, has shown signs that he is capable of following in the 34-year-old’s footsteps.
The teenager enjoyed a whirlwind debut campaign in one of Europe’s top leagues. Diomande scored 12 and provided an additional eight assists. 118 successful dribbles was more than any other player. 56 chances created ranked among the top 10 in the Bundesliga. He’s a player seemingly destined for the top.
Diomande can take game to the next level under Iraola
And crucially is that Liverpool need to make a splash in the market in order to sign their Salah successor. Diomande is the more direct option down the flank but he’s a winger who can be moulded into an all-round goal threat. Just look at how Andoni Iraola transformed Antoine Semenyo into one of the best wide players in England’s top tier.
Iraola succeeded Arne Slot in the Anfield dugout earlier this month. The Spaniard worked wonders during his time at the Vitality Stadium, guiding Bournemouth to a first ever European finish in his final season on the south coast.
What’s more, Iraola took Semenyo and turned the Ghana international into one of the most dangerous attackers in the Premier League. The Manchester City man always had the potential to take his game to the next level. And Dominic Solanke’s exit proved to be the catalyst for Semenyo to go on and take the next step.
Diomande is probably the closest player in terms of like-for-like with Semenyo. The Ivorian is incredibly two-footed and able to operate on either flank, just as Semenyo is able to. They look to take players on, and the unpredictability to their game means they’re incredibly lethal in one-on-one situations.
Admittedly, Diomande is far more raw than Semenyo was when Iraola took over as Bournemouth boss in 2023. However, the 43-year-old’s approach suited Semenyo. The chaotic, high-pressing style of play allowed Semenyo to thrive. It stands to reason that his high-octane approach will suit Diomande.

The RB Leipzig man ranked fourth for possession won in the attacking third (27) in Germany’s top tier last term. It meant that RB Leipzig ranked eighth for shots following a counter attack (39) in the 2025-26 Bundesliga campaign.
Iraola’s Bournemouth side, meanwhile, finished the season fourth for possession won in the attacking third (174) and fourth for shots following a counter attack (43). While much of that was down to the reactive gameplan that Iraola implemented - Bournemouth had the 11th highest possession average (50.1%) in the Premier League - he needed his players to work hard off the ball in order to win possession in dangerous positions.
And while he will need to tinker with that approach in a more dominant Liverpool side, Klopp’s ‘heavy metal’ football still worked even as his Reds team dictated the tempo. Liverpool, however, need to get to work sealing the deal for Diomande sooner rather than later. He’s already a known entity on the European circuit.
After Monday’s superb Ecuador showing, Diomande has proven he can cut the mustard on the world stage. Diomande’s shown he’s worthy of being Salah’s Liverpool successor and a player who can go on to become a world beater under Iraola.
