Wrexham saw their sequence of promotions come to an end with a seventh place finish in the Championship last season, but the Welsh side are keen to make an even bigger impact in the 2026-27 campaign and are odds-on to overcome Watford at the Racecourse Ground.

Every season seems to bring about raised expectations for the Red Dragons, who kicked off the campaign with a 1-1 draw at Cardiff.

Phil Parkinson watched his side take an early lead against the Bluebirds but were unable to widen the advantage and paid a heavy price when Ruben Colwill lashed in an injury-time free-kick for the home side.

Watford went into their fixture at home to Southampton with modest expectations, but were rewarded for an intense and focused performance with a 2-1 victory.

The Hornets were largely overlooked in pre-season promotion conversations but they will aim to build on their promising start.

Team news

Wrexham are unlikely to make too many changes after their strong performance in the 1-1 draw at Cardiff. Josh Windass (muscle strain) remains out of contention.

Left back Marc Bola (hamstring) faces a spell on the sidelines, so summer signing Jordan Zemua should make his first start in the Watford defence.

Kwadwo Baah, Jeremy Ngakia (both thigh) and Travis Akomeah (foot) are unavailable and Jack Grieves is short of match fitness.

The stats

Wrexham have kept just two clean sheets in their last 11 matches

The Red Dragons have conceded the first goal in three of their last four fixtures

Both teams have scored in each of Wrexham’s last three league games

Three of the last six league meetings between the clubs have seen the points shared

Four of Watford’s last five games have featured at least three goals

Watford have gone eight Championship matches without keeping a clean sheet

Prediction

Watford sprang one of the surprises of Championship matchday one with their hard-fought victory over Southampton and they can follow that by picking up a point in north Wales.

The managerial merry-go-round continues for the Hornets, who have started the season under Italian tactician Alessio Dionisi.

But they looked a highly-motivated, well-organised group last weekend and should offer stiff resistance to a Wrexham side who were left feeling short-changed by their draw at Cardiff.

Wrexham created and missed plenty of opportunities against the Bluebirds and they cannot expect an easy ride from Watford, who banked four points from the two fixtures between the teams last season.
