Wolves start their first season in the Championship since 2017-18 with a home fixture against a team they should easily beat if they are to bounce straight back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Blackburn struggled last season, finishing 20th in the second tier, and interim manager Michael O'Neill did not fancy the prospect of continuing with the Lancastrian side, choosing to focus solely on his role as Northern Ireland manager.

Both teams will have been buoyed by victories in the first round of the Carabao Cup, Blackburn coming from a goal down to win 2-1 at Burton while Wolves easily dispatched Port Vale 3-0.

Team news

New Wolves boss Cesar Peixoto will be without new £7.7million signing Rafiki Said, Sam Johnstone and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde due to injury, while Ladislav Krejci is not yet ready to start from the off. Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez will be hoping to make their league debuts..

Blackburn will be without Lewis Miller, Moussa Baradji, Dion De Neve and Mathias Jorgensen due to injury, even though the latter is close to a return. Scott Wharton and Augustus Kargbo are back in training and may feature while Sam Morsy arrived on a free transfer earlier this week and will at least be in the squad.

The stats

Blackburn accrued more points away than home last season.

Wolves lost just twice at home during their last Championship season.

Prediction

Wolves start their Championship season under a new manager in Cesar Peixoto following the sacking of Rob Edwards, and the Portuguese has apparently settled in well, with his side winning with clean sheets in four of five games under his leadership.

The experienced Kieran Trippier and Mexico international Raul Jimenez are welcome additions to the squad, and Wolves should have too much class for a Blackburn side who are likely once again to be involved in a relegation battle.

The return of Tony Mowbray to Ewood Park is a plus, while the signing of Sam Morsy from Ipswich will help bolster the midfield.

However, the experienced Mowbray may struggle to conjure much of a revival and survival is likely to be the most Rovers fans can expect.

Blackburn had a better record on the road than at home last season, but it is difficult to see them coming away from Molineux with a positive result and a comfortable home win is on the agenda.

Wolves were 3-0 up by half-time against Port Vale and while Blackburn will offer sterner resistance, the hosts will want to make a fast start in what is an expected promotion bid this season.
