  • Sheffield Wednesday have lost 11 straight Championship games

  • Southampton were impressive 5-0 winners over QPR last time out

  • Recommended bet: Finn Azaz to score anytime

Sheffield Wednesday’s torrid season continued in midweek as the club suffered their 12th consecutive loss in all competitions.

Indeed, the Owls have claimed just a single victory this season and will be playing in the third tier during the 2026/27 campaign.

Southampton are up to seventh in the table following their 5-0 win over QPR in midweek and sit just four points off the play-off positions.

Tonda Eckert’s side will be looking to pile on even more misery to the Owls this weekend.

Team news

To make matters worse for the home side, they have plenty of first team players out injured.

Pierce Charles, Murphy Cooper, Max Lowe, Ernie Weaver, Di'Shon Bernard, Liam Cooper, Nathaniel Chalobah, Marvelous Nakamba and George Brown will all be unavailable for the visit of the Saints on Saturday afternoon.

Gabriel Otegbayo could make a return after his suspension ended.

For the Saints, Welington, Mads Roerslev and Jay Robinson all still remain sidelined heading into this clash.

Apart from that, however, Eckert has a strong enough squad available for the trip to Yorkshire.

The stats

Southampton have won the previous three meetings between these teams in the second tier.

In fact, the Owls have not secured a victory against the Saints since a 2-0 win back in April 2009.

The home side have lost 25 of their 34 matches in the second tier this term, winning a solitary match.

They also have the worst attacking record in the division (20 goals), while conceding the most goals in the league (68).

In contrast, the Saints have one of the best attacking records, finding the back of the net on 54 occasions, ranking them fourth in the Championship.

The Owls have conceded at least twice in six of their previous eight league matches.

Finn Azaz has scored nine goals and registered six assists for the Saints in the second tier this season.

Prediction

On the evidence of recent months, the Owls look set to suffer yet another Championship defeat in a season they likely can’t wait to get out the other side of.

The question is, how many goals will Southampton score this weekend? They will be keen to keep boosting their tally, especially following that five-goal salvo against QPR, and in the knowledge that the sides from seventh to 14th in the Championship went into the weekend separated by just three points. Goal difference could have a decisive effect on the play-off race.

Republic of Ireland international Azaz was a man in form during that clash, scoring and grabbing an assist.

He also got the opener in January’s win at Stoke and has nine league goals this season, behind only Adam Armstrong for the Saints. He could be the man to take advantage of a shambolic Wednesday defence.
