  • Sheff Wed ended a run of 13 straight league defeats with a 1-1 with Watford

  • Ipswich four points off automatic promotion places after drawing last two games

  • Recommended bet: George Hirst to score anytime

Sheffield Wednesday managed to pick up their first points of 2026 thanks to a 1-1 draw with Watford in midweek.

The Owls actually took the lead courtesy of Jerry Yates, but a late equaliser from the Hornets prevented them from sealing just a second league win this term.

Ipswich remain in the hunt for a return to the Premier League after only a season away, but the Tractor Boys have drawn their last two games to sit four points adrift of Middlesbrough in second place.

Team news

The Owls remain without the services of Murphy Cooper, Di'Shon Bernard, Max Lowe, Liam Cooper, Ernie Weaver, Olaf Kobacki and George Brown due to injury ahead of this clash.

Town boss Kieran McKenna does not have as many players out injured for this game, although defenders Conor Townsend and Ashley Young will not be available.

Elsewhere, winger Jaden Philogene is another absentee for the away side. He has been missing since the middle of January and it remains to be seen when he will return to action for the promotion hopefuls.

The stats

Ipswich hold the upper hand in the recent rivalry between the two clubs, winning the previous three fixtures.

The highlight was a 6-0 demolition of the Owls in March 2024, the season in which Town sealed promotion to the Premier League.

Both teams have scored in Wednesday's last three fixtures, while three of the previous six Ipswich games has featured both teams finding the back of the net.

The Owls have both the worst attacking record (23 goals scored) and defensive record (74 goals conceded) in the second tier.

Ipswich, on the other hand, have scored 68 goals, the second best in the Championship, while only one club has conceded fewer than the 38 goals McKenna's men have let in this season.

Former Owls star George Hirst has scored nine goals for the Tractor Boys this season and that includes three in his previous five league matches.

The son of former Wednesday legend David, Hirst has scored once previously against the Owls, netting in a 4-1 defeat during his time with Portsmouth in 2022.

Prediction

The Owls showed they still have some fight in them during the 1-1 draw with the Hornets.

McKenna, therefore, will still be wary that the relegated outfir can pose a threat, although he will be confident that his team can seal all three points.

With an automatic promotion spot within reach, every victory is imperative over the next few weeks.

Hirst is a man in form and he will be eager to take advantage of a poor defence during this match.
