Preston boss Paul Heckingbottom is in desperate need of a win this weekend

Preston are propping up the Championship table after four successive defeats and will be desperate to turn the tide at the expense of regional rivals Blackburn at Deepdale on Saturday.

Pressure is mounting on North End manager Paul Heckingbottom, who is responsible for the club’s worst start to a league season since 1956.

And there was a lack of positivity around after last season when Preston concluded with three losses and one win from their final four fixtures.

While Preston are in desperate need of a change of fortune, Blackburn are going along fairly nicely with five points taken from a demanding set of early fixtures.

Rovers have caught the eye in some high-profile games, drawing 2-2 at Wolves and winning 2-1 at home to Middlesbrough.

Tony Mowbray’s side were mentioned as possible relegation candidates but a victory would lift them into the top half of the table.

Team news

Preston could involve season-long loanee Liam Gibbs and permanent signing Johnny Kenny after their deadline-day arrivals from Norwich and Celtic. However, midfielder Ali McCann (hamstring) faces a few weeks on the sidelines.

Blackburn centre-back Tom Atcheson serves a one-game ban after his red card in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw at Lincoln. Selection is further complicated by the absences of goalkeeper Mathias Jorgensen (hamstring), defender Lewis Miller (Achilles) and striker Yuki Ohashi (hamstring).

The stats

Preston have scored in six of their last seven home league fixtures.

North End have netted in the second half in five of their last six league games.

Both teams have found the net in seven of the last nine Championship games between these sides.

Blackburn have kept one clean sheet in their last 11 fixtures.

Blackburn have failed to score in the first half of each of their last four games.

Rovers have lost two of their last three matches by a 2-1 scoreline.

Prediction

Preston can give something back to their fans by defeating Blackburn in an intense Lancashire derby.

Facing a local rival may just be the best thing for Preston, who suffered their latest setback on Tuesday when losing 3-1 at home to Bristol City.

Heckingbottom’s side have grown accustomed to conceding the first goal, but they can get their noses in front against a Blackburn side destabilised by the absence of key suspended defender Tom Atcheson.

Blackburn have kept a largely settled side, but an enforced rejig at the back could work against them in an intense, physical encounter.
