Portsmouth are on the slide after back-to-back defeats and they will be hoping for a response against fellow strugglers Cardiff at Fratton Park on Saturday.

It is early days but the need for points is becoming more urgent for Pompey and Cardiff, who sit 21st and 19th in the Championship standings.

Featuring towards the lower end of the table is nothing new for Portsmouth, who were placed 16th and 18th in each of the last two campaigns.

It was hoped that this season would be different, but a new-look Portsmouth side have struggled to gel and they were particularly poor in the midweek 2-0 loss at home to Derby.

Cardiff will be rather less concerned as they continue getting to grips with second tier football.

They made a solid enough start with three successive draws, before tasting defeat in Wednesday’s 2-1 reverse at QPR.

Prediction

Cardiff have played some excellent football in the early weeks of the season and they can prevail over Portsmouth in an entertaining encounter.

The Bluebirds favour an attacking style of play and were the dominant side in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at home to Sheffield United when they won the shot count 28 to six.

They were less impressive in the 2-1 midweek loss at QPR, but should face a simpler task against Portsmouth, who are going through a really tough spell.

Portsmouth were among the more active teams in the transfer market, sealing nine permanent signings and three loans, but they are still searching for the right blend.

The south coast side have lost both of their home matches and their struggles on the south coast are set to continue.

Score Prediction: Portsmouth 1-2 Cardiff
