Welsh rivals Cardiff City and Wrexham meet for the first time in a league game since 2002 as they prepare for a spicy start to their new Championship campaigns.

The Cardiff City Stadium will be rocking as the Bluebirds return to the second tier following a year in League One.

Opponents Wrexham will be keen to get off to a flier and erase the memories of last season's late drop-off which cost them a place in the play-offs.

Team news

Cardiff hope to have skipper Calum Chambers fit to line up alongside Gabriel Osho in central defence, but Will Fish is injured.

The Bluebirds' new signing from Lincoln, Jack Moylan, is hoping for a first start in the No.10 role after coming off the bench against Swindon.

Last season's Wrexham Player of the Year, 17-goal top scorer Josh Windass, has been ruled out along with midfielder Ben Sheaf.

New Zealand World Cup defender Liberato Cacace is not fully fit so may not be involved.

The stats

Cardiff striker Yusef Salech, who netted 14 goals last season, has scored in four consecutive games this summer, bagging two against Swindon; he averaged 2.6 shots per game last term.

These two have not met in a league game since 2002 though they did meet at Wrexham last October in a Carabao Cup tie which the visiting Bluebirds won 2-1.

City won an average 6.2 corners per game last season, more than any other side in League One.

Wrexham averaged 4.5 corners per game in last season's Championship, ranking them 19th in the second tier.

Referee Andrew Kitchen has taken charge of five games featuring either Cardiff or Wrexham over the past two seasons, five games which have produced just 11 cards.

Prediction

There have been enough odds-busting results over the first weekend to remind us that the start of a new season is a challenging time to assess clubs.

Throw in the fact that Cardiff versus Wrexham is a spicy rivalry with Welsh bragging rights on the line, and a clear view on an outcome for this game does not look that straightforward.

The tame way out would be to err towards the draw but this looks like an opportunity to maybe consider a Bet Builder based on what we think we know.

City striker Yusef Salech, for example, is in the hottest of form with a goal in his final three summer friendlies and then two more in last weekend's 3-2 win over Swindon in the Carabao Cup.

He had four shots with three on target against the Robins, and even though Wrexham are a cut above Swindon obviously, take Salech to have over 1.5 shots on target.

Wrexham only averaged 4.5 corners last season, one of the lower tallies in the Championship and they are the away side on Monday.

So make Under 4.5 Wrexham corners the second leg of the Bet Builder.

Cards will be a warm order in a game as these two clash for the first time in a league game for over a decade.

You would expect it to be spicy yet maybe the actual play is to swim against that tide.

Wrexham picked up 74 cards last season with only Sheffield Wednesday in the second tier collecting fewer. Cardiff picked up 82 making them the 10th-best behaved team in League One.

There will be quite the atmosphere at the Cardiff City Stadium but nothing in the stats to suggest referee Andrew Kitchen will show more than 3.5 cards.

Kitchen showed three cards or less in seven of his final eight Championship games last season.

Score prediction: Cardiff City 1-1 Wrexham

Back Yusef Salech to have Over 1.5 Shots on Target, Under 4.5 Wrexham Corners, Under 3.5 Cards in a Bet Builder at 13/2 with LiveScore Bet.
