Two out-of-form sides clash at the Toughsheet Community Stadium on Saturday lunchtime when Bolton host Cardiff.

Bolton suffered a fourth-straight league defeat in midweek when going down 3-2 to West Ham but they gave a good account of themselves in front of their home fans.

Cardiff dominated their midweek home fixture against Stoke but could only manage a 1-1 draw against the Potters.

Team news

Defenders Lewis Brunt and Luca Stephenson are on the sidelines for Bolton, with the latter having not played since the opening league win over Preston due to a thigh strain.

Cardiff’s injury doubts include Rubin Colwell, who is nursing an ankle problem, and Isaak Davies (hamstring), while Callum Chambers, Dylan Lawlor and Will Fish are more long-term absentees.

The stats

Bolton’s sole league win came in their first fixture when beating Preston 2-1 at home.

The Trotters have failed to score in three of their last five games.

Bolton have gained one point from their last five league games, with Cardiff collecting three over the same period.

Cardiff have accrued one point from three away games.

Both teams to score has landed in five of Cardiff’s six league fixtures.

Bolton won last season’s corresponding fixture 1-0 thanks to a 94th-minute winner from Amario Cozier-Duberry.

Prediction

Something has to give between these two sides who find themselves towards the bottom of the Championship table.

Bolton arguably deserved a draw against West Ham in midweek but their defence, hampered by injuries, has now conceded nine goals in their last three games.

The Trotters have lost four of their six league games and another defeat could be in the offing against Cardiff.

Brian Barry-Murphy’s side finished 16 points clear of Bolton in League One last season and looked to be hitting some form when racking up 26 shots against Stoke on Tuesday.

Bolton’s defence is likely to be breached if facing a similar assault, and despite arriving in search of a first league win, Cardiff have only lost twice.

Goals are likely given the defensive record of the two sides and Cardiff’s number nine Yousef Salech can get on the scoresheet.
