About The Championship and Its Format The Championship traces its roots back to 1892 and features 24 participating clubs competing across a 46-game season. Known commercially as the Sky Bet Championship, the division sits at the second tier of the English Football League pyramid, directly below the Premier League and above League One. In 2023-24, Championship attendances outstripped those of La Liga, the Bundesliga, and Serie A, making it the second-highest attended league in Europe overall, with an average of around 22,000 fans per game — second only to the German 2. Bundesliga among second-tier divisions worldwide. Combined club revenue across the division reached a record £958 million in 2023-24. If teams finish level on points, goal difference and then goals scored are used to separate them. Recent champions include Leicester City, who claimed the title in 2023-24, and Leeds United, who won it in 2024-25.

2025/2026 Season So Far The 2025/26 Championship season has already delivered the kind of drama and unpredictability the division is renowned for. Several clubs with recent top-flight experience are pushing hard at the summit, with automatic promotion places fiercely contested and the standings shifting week to week. The density of the 46-game schedule means momentum swings quickly, and no team can afford a prolonged poor run. The play-off places have drawn a cluster of clubs into contention, adding intrigue across a wide portion of the table. Mid-table, ambitions of a late surge are keeping plenty of teams motivated, while results at the top continue to reshape expectations about who the genuine promotion contenders are. At the foot of the table, the three relegation places have focused minds early, with a number of sides separated by only a handful of points. Every fixture carries enormous weight for those clubs scrapping to retain their Championship status.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Championship

When is the Championship play-off final?

For many years, the Championship play-off final has been organized in late May. The location is always the same - Wembley Stadium in London. In 2026, it is scheduled for May 23rd.

How Many Games Are Played in the Championship?

Since there are 24 teams in total, each one plays 23 games twice a season, at home and at an away stadium. That means the regular season has 46 matches in total. The regular round is always organized from Friday to Sunday, but there are exceptions during some weeks when games are played between Tuesday and Thursday.

How does the Promotion and Relegation System work?

Each Championship season consists of 46 games. At the end of the campaign, the bottom three clubs are relegated to League One. The top two sides earn automatic promotion to the Premier League, while a further four clubs — finishing third through sixth — compete in the play-offs for the final promotion spot. The play-off semi-finals are played over two legs, with the third-placed side facing sixth and fourth taking on fifth, with the semi-finals scheduled for mid-May 2026. The play-off final takes place on Saturday 23 May 2026 at Wembley Stadium, with the single-leg showpiece widely dubbed 'the richest game in football' — promotion to the Premier League is worth over £100 million to the winning club. From 2026-27, the play-offs will expand from four to six teams.

How does Participation in European and Domestic Cups

Championship clubs do not qualify for European competition, so the focus outside of league action is entirely on domestic cup runs. Clubs across the division take part in:

  • The FA Cup
  • The Carabao Cup (EFL Cup)
  • The EFL Trophy (open to under-21 squads)

Domestic cup competitions offer Championship sides the opportunity to test themselves against Premier League opposition, while the EFL Trophy provides younger players with valuable first-team experience across the course of the season.
