Manchester United are one of the clubs who have made 'discreet enquiries' about the availability of Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams, reports BBC Sport.

United secured third place in the Premier League on Sunday as they beat Forest. On the other side, 25-year-old Williams played the full 90 minutes, as he has in all but three games he's been available for this season - and in one of those he only went off as he was shown a red card.

Williams is the subject of growing interest from top Premier League clubs, reports BBC Sport, as some have taken steps to working out whether he'd be available.

United are one of the clubs who have made 'discreet enquiries' to understand the full-back's situation heading into the summer, along with Aston Villa, Newcastle and Everton.

With that said, Forest are determined to keep him, and have opened contract talks amid a backdrop of Premier League interest.

Williams has three years left on his current deal, but Forest want to reward his performances and fend off interest by handing him a new one, ending any uncertainty over his future.

Gary Neville wants a United left-back

United legend Gary Neville has clamoured for the club to sign a new left-back, as well as a defender who can play in multiple positions across the back line.

Williams, while largely featuring at left-back for Forest this season, has also played on the right in 11 games, and could be the man United need.

Neville said on Sky Sports: "They need backup at full-back… on both sides. In an ideal world you bring three defenders in. I’m trying to think of [Piero] Hincapie at Arsenal who plays left-back and left centre-back, I think Ben White’s done that as well, [Cristhian] Mosquera’s done that, where they’ve played [two positions].

"They almost need one of them who can play in two positions, that can support. Then they need another top centre-back and then they do need a left-back. I think three defenders would be perfect.

"A centre-back who can play centre-back and right-back. A centre-back who’s top notch who can really be a figurehead, and then a left-back to back up Luke Shaw so that they can alternate between Premier League and Champions League, whatever the most important matches are."

Whether Williams is lured away from Forest remains to be seen, but with two goals and three assists in the Premier League this term from full-back, and 15 Europa League games under his belt on the way to the semi-final, he's clearly impressed.
