Mikel Arteta wants to strengthen the English core of his Arsenal side, and the plan to lure Anthony Gordon away from Newcastle is part of that strategy, reports FootballTransfers.

The Gunners are six points clear atop the Premier League and will want to strengthen their side in the summer if they win it or not. FootballTransfers reports they are planning a strategy to increase their English core.

As a result of that, they state Arsenal want to make a bid for Newcastle winger Gordon.

While sources have previously indicated that the Magpies will have no interest in selling their winger, it's now believed they will be willing to sell two or three players, and Gordon is one of the most saleable assets they have, amid interest from the Gunners and a number of other big clubs.

The strategy to land more English players also sees Arsenal interested in fellow Newcastle man Tino Livramento, who has played five times for the Three Lions and also has a host of big clubs on his tail.

Arsenal's English options

The England squad is already fill with some top English talent. Last summer, they signed Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, who are both regulars in the England set-up.

Arsenal also boast two of the best players the Three Lions have at their disposal, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, as well as Ben White, who recently returned to the England fold, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Max Dowman, who is almost certain to play a big part for England in the coming years.

Gordon would be a phenomenal asset to add to the potential Premier League-winning squad, having scored 17 goals and assisted five more in all competitions this season.

Of those contributions, 10 goals and two assists have come in the Champions League, which Arsenal have gone deep into this season, with a quarter-final against Sporting CP to come.

The decision to bid for Gordon doesn't only come because the Gunners want to add to their core of English players.

It's stated they want to bag a new left-winger, with Gabriel Martinelli potentially moving on in the summer. As mentioned, Gordon is one of the best-performing Premier League wingers this season, so he'd be a top replacement for the Brazilian.
