Belle Vue is the setting for Thursday’s Super League clash between midtable Wakefield Trinity and high-flying Leeds Rhinos.

Both teams approach this contest buoyed by impressive victories in their previous outings.

The Rhinos cruised past Salford with a commanding 42-6 triumph at Headingley while Wakefield produced a stunning 46-10 win away to Huddersfield Giants.

Daryl Powell’s men stunned Leeds with a 14-12 victory on their Super League return in February and with just six points and three spots in the league standings separating these Yorkshire rivals, another nail-biting contest is in prospect.

Team news

Powell has been forced into three changes for the clash with forwards Caleb Hamlin-Uele, Thomas Doyle and Isaiah Vagana missing out.

The Trinity coach is able to recall centre Oliver Pratt, who has recovered from the hip knock that has kept him on the sidelines over recent weeks, while half-back Oliver Russell returns after his two-week loan at Salford.

Meanwhile, Leeds coach Brad Arthur has made one change to his initial 21-man squad with half-back Jack Sinfield returning after two games out.

He replaces outside-back Ethan Clark-Wood, who has a shoulder injury.

Alfie Edgell looks set to keep his place on the wing after grabbing a hat-trick of tries against Salford, keeping Riley Lumb out of the starting line-up.

Lumb, half-back George Brown and forward Ben Littlewood are pushing to make the matchday 17.

The stats

Wakefield have won two of their last three clashes with Leeds, both by margins of two points or fewer.

Only leaders Hull KR and St Helens have conceded fewer points than Leeds Rhinos (231) in Super League this year.

Wakefield have put more points on the board (469) than the Rhinos (408) through 19 games.

The reverse fixture in February saw Wakefield race into a 14-6 half-time lead with Leeds managing only one score after the break.

Leeds claimed a narrow 22-18 home win in the most recent derby, surviving a Wakefield fightback.

Trinity’s Max Jowitt has scored four tries across the last three meetings with Leeds.

Leeds’ Harry Newman has scored nine tries this season and crossed in both previous contests with Wakefield.

Prediction

Wakefield’s shock win at Headingley in the campaign opener underlined their Super League credentials, and with both teams in decent form, another tight tussle could be on the cards.

The Rhinos may be the slight favourites, but Wakefield’s ability to score points and their upward momentum since promotion means they should not be underestimated — especially at home.

Trinity have a strong recent record at Belle Vue where Catalans Dragons and reigning Super League champions Wigan Warriors have come up short.

Leeds’ firepower out wide means they will always pose a threat, but Trinity can absorb pressure and hit on the break to ensure another close contest.
