Hoffenheim vs Borussia Dortmund - 2:30 pm (Bundesliga)
Hoffenheim had looked certain to secure Champions League qualification this season, however, a regression in results has muddied the waters, and Christian Ilzer’s side might have to go gung-ho in search of points when they host top-four rivals Dortmund on Saturday. 100 goals have been scored in Hoffenheim’s league fixtures since August, which works out at an average of 3.44 per game, and more excitement is expected here.
In last year’s corresponding fixture, Dortmund emerged with the points following a five-goal thriller (3-2) and all the ingredients are there to cook something similar this weekend. With defensive issues the driving force, Hoffenheim’s last five assignments averaged 4.00 goals per 90 minutes, so expect action at the PreZero Arena.
Wrexham vs Stoke City - 3:00 pm (Championship)
Successive defeats to Southampton and Brighton have put a wobble in Wrexham’s playoff pursuit and with ground to make up, the Welsh outfit will need to push hard for victory against Stoke on Saturday. Wrexham’s home matches in the Championship have been averaging a notable 3.42 goals this season and more drama could unfold when they chase down a win against the Potters.
Indeed, no venue in the division has seen more goals (72) in total than Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground since the start of the campaign. Visiting Stoke meanwhile, have conceded at least two goals in each of their last four away games, however, Wrexham have secured just one clean sheet in their last 12 league games on home soil. This has the makings of an entertaining tussle.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Brighton - 5:30 pm (Premier League)
Roberto De Zerbi takes charge of a home fixture for Tottenham for the first time on Saturday evening and as fate would have it, the Italian coach’s former employers, Brighton, are the visitors. De Zerbi will have his new charges fully charged and raring to go against Albion, so expect plenty of hard running and forward forays from relegation-threatened Spurs.
Tottenham’s search for a vital victory should leave plenty of space for Brighton to exploit on the counter attack, so don’t be surprised if the teams trade blows here. In addition, this fixture has a high-scoring history and over 2.5 goals have been scored in each of the clubs’ last six meetings, including their 2-2 draw back in September.
Atletico Madrid vs Real Sociedad - 8:00 pm (Copa del Rey)
Domestic silverware in the form of the Copa del Rey is on the line on Saturday night when Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad contest the competition’s final at La Cartuja. Atletico’s recent fixtures across two competitions (La Liga & Champions League) have been frenetic, so bettors should expect more chaos in this showpiece showdown.
Atletico tend to play with extra energy and emotion in fixtures of significance and five of their last six games (vs Spurs, Real Madrid, Barcelona x 3 and Sevilla) have produced over 2.5 goals. If that wasn’t enough, Atletico’s last encounter with Real Sociedad featured five goals (3-2). That high-scoring skirmish was contested just a couple of weeks ago on March 7th, and that might have laid the foundation for a thrilling cup final.
Lille vs Nice - 8:05 pm (Ligue 1)
Struggling Nice have been shipping far too many goals of late. They suffered heavy defeats to Rennes (0-4), PSG (0-4) and Strasbourg (1-3) in three of their last six assignments and they have developed a habit of capitulating against the better sides in Ligue 1. They were also hammered 4-1 by Brest, 5-1 by Marseille and 5-1 by Toulouse earlier in the campaign
Top-four chasers Lille will be hoping to do some damage against this vulnerable Nice defence on Saturday evening. Les Dogues (3rd) enjoyed impressive wins over Lens (3-0) and Toulouse (4-0) in their last two outings, which should warm them up nicely for their meeting with Nice. Only rock-bottom Metz (40) have conceded more goals on the road than Nice (30) this season and they might suffer on their travels again here.
