  • Bayern Munich Women lost 7-1 at Barcelona on matchday one of Champions League

  • Arsenal Women beat Barca in the final to win Champions League last season

  • Recommended bet: Arsenal Women to win

Arsenal Women shocked Barcelona to win last season's Champions League final but coach Renee Slegers and her players now have a target on their backs in Europe.

Their defence of the trophy began with a 2-1 home defeat to Lyon although the Gunners steadied the ship with a 2-0 win away to Benfica on matchday two.

This week Arsenal travel to Bayern Munich, who have also had a patchy start to their campaign, losing 7-1 to Barca in their opening game before clinching a 2-1 home win over Juventus thanks to Lea Schuller's 95th-minute goal.

Team news

Bayern Munich Women have a fitness doubt over key forward Schuller, who missed last week's Bundesliga win over Union Berlin.

Vanessa Giles, Carolin Simon, Tuva Hansen and Ena Mahmutovic are unlikely to feature and Lena Oberdorf and Sarah Zadrazil remain sidelined with serious knee injuries.

Arsenal Women defender Katie Reid has been ruled out for the season after suffering an ACL injury in training.

She joins fellow centre-back Leah Williamson and goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger on the sidelines while captain Kim Little will be assessed after sitting out Saturday's WSL clash with Chelsea.

The stats

Bayern Munich Women's last seven Bundesliga results were victories featuring over 3.5 goals.

Bayern have lost four of their last five Champions League matches.

Both teams have scored in five of Bayern's last seven games in all competitions.

Arsenal Women have won only three of their last eight matches.

Alessia Russo has scored five goals in her last six Champions League appearances.

Both teams scored in three of Arsenal's four WSL wins this season.

Prediction

Arsenal Women were frustrated by two disallowed goals in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Women's Super League but they can bounce back with a victory over Bayern Munich.

The fact that the Gunners gave the WSL leaders such a scare was a positive for coach Slegers and Bayern have struggled against Europe's top clubs in the past couple of seasons.

They have won their last four Bundesliga games by 5-1, 4-1, 6-0 and 4-0 scorelines but were blown away by Barcelona on matchday one of the Champions League.

Barca, beaten 1-0 by Arsenal in last season's final, went 3-0 up inside 27 minutes on their way to a 7-1 rout of Bayern, who then needed an injury-time goal to see off Juventus in their first home game.

The Germans were thumped 6-1 on aggregate by Lyon in last term's quarter-finals and Arsenal went on to eliminate the French side in the semis.

Both clubs have been hampered by injuries this season but Arsenal still have an abundance of attacking talent including in-form striker Russo and brilliant Spanish playmaker Mariona Caldentey.

England star Chloe Kelly and £1million summer signing Olivia Smith were among their substitutes against Chelsea and the European champions should be too slick for a limited Bayern side.
