Week One of the 2026-27 NFL season concludes in Kansas City with an AFC West matchup between the Chiefs and the Denver Broncos. Obviously, KC failed to meet expectations last year, but with Patrick Mahomes healthy, the Chiefs once again have their eyes on the Lombardi Trophy. Meanwhile, the Broncos feel like they are a Super Bowl-worthy team after posting the best record in the AFC last season.

Unless you were living under a rock, you know that Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending torn ACL in December. Thankfully, the three-time Super Bowl MVP has made a full recovery and has no injury designation ahead of tonight's game.

"I mean, this has always been the goal: to get out there and play week one," Mahomes told reporters on September 10th. "It was a long offseason. A lot of work... but now we get to go out there and play the sport that I love."

As you would expect, the conversation around Arrowhead Stadium this off-season was primarily focused on Patrick Mahomes' recovery process and his ability to play in Week One. Now that Kansas City's starting QB will be able to take the field unencumbered, Mahomes expects this will mark the end of concerns regarding his left knee.

"Hopefully, I'm done with the questions about the leg," he joked as he walked away from the microphones at the end of his press conference on Thursday.

Outside of Mahomes' recovery, the other big story in Kansas City was the signing of running back and reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III, who joined the Chiefs this off-season on a three-year, $45 million contract. The addition of Walker brings a new dynamic to KC's offense, which has lacked a game-breaking rusher for quite some time.

"He's a talented football player. He runs tough. He has speed. He can break a touchdown at any moment. He can catch the ball. He does - kind of - it all," Mahomes said of Walker. "When you have those guys on your team, you find ways to get them the football. If that's either just handing the ball off to him or throwing it to him, you've got to. We got him for a reason. He came in with the right mindset and mentality, and he's really attacked this off-season. I think he's as excited as anybody to get out there at Arrowhead and have Chiefs Kingdom behind him."

Walker is being thrown into the deep end with his first game coming against the Broncos, who swept the Chiefs for the first time since the 2014-15 season, thanks mostly to impressive defensive performances. And with KC's projected starting left tackle Josh Simmons already ruled out of tonight’s contest with a back injury, the Chiefs can expect Denver to send extra pass rushers throughout this matchup.

"The first few games are always a challenge," explained Kansas City head coach Andy Reid. "Vance (Joseph) is a sharp guy, and he's got a nice package full of blitzes that he has. I'm sure he'll unload a few of them. So, you go out, and you prepare for what you can and get yourself right. You want to be able to play fast and not stagger yourself down to where you can't function... He's got plenty of things he can throw at you for sure."

With so much success last year in the Mile High City, Denver's off-season was not nearly as eventful as KC's. In fact, the Broncos didn't sign a single free agent, instead opting to re-sign eight players from last year's team that went 14-3.

"D-line and O-line, the priority we put in those positions and the depth that those positions have really helped us the last couple of years and is a large part of our success," Denver general manager George Paton said late last month. "These guys have all played in games, big games, and done well. All these guys we feel like we can play... I mean, we led the league in sacks the last two years."

To the Broncos' credit, they did not sit idly by in the off-season. They made a blockbuster trade to acquire wide receiver Jaylen Waddle from the Miami Dolphins for three draft picks.

"You can't really explain the type of player he is. You've just got to get out there and play, and when you throw him the ball, you just understand that it's a little bit different. He's just a really great football player," said quarterback Bo Nix during the preseason. "He adds a lot to our team... His personality just gets everybody going. He's very exciting, and he's just got a great positive attitude out there. He's going to be great for us."

Outside of the trade for Waddle and the players the Broncos selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, the team seemed content to run it back, and rightfully so; they came up just one game shy of the Super Bowl. Head coach Sean Payton explained how this team still believes it is close to the ultimate goal.

“I think there is a feeling of, there’s still that hunger [from] coming up short,” he said. “Ultimately, any good team begins to get taken over by the leaders within the locker room. And I feel like that experience can serve this team well."

As they have done for years now, the Broncos must focus their game plan on limiting Patrick Mahomes' effectiveness. Even though he is coming off an injury, Denver is not underestimating the two-time league MVP.

"I think Patrick's going to be Patrick. In my opinion, he wouldn't play if he couldn't be himself," defensive coordinator Vance Joseph told reporters on Friday. "From what I hear and from what I read, he's feeling great, so we expect Patrick to be Patrick... We'll get his best shot."

And, of course, this Monday Night matchup carries extra weight since it is a Divisional game between two squads with Super Bowl aspirations. That has set the stage for a highly anticipated contest that will cap off an excellent first week of the regular season.

"You get put on Monday Night Football, Week One. That means you've got something to go out there and prove. So, we're excited as a team," Bo Nix said on September 9th. "It's going to be a really big challenge, but one that I think we're going to respond well to. We've just got to go out there and play really hard."

Prediction for Denver Broncos @ Kansas City Chiefs (-2.5)

Something tells me that the Chiefs are going to take the field first if they win the coin toss. Kansas City probably wants to send Patrick Mahomes out there so that he can shake off the rust after being sidelined for so long. With the goal of easing him back into competition, the Chiefs will probably want to lean on the rushing attack early, but I expect the Broncos will be prepared for that. Their defense will force KC to abandon the run, allowing Denver to send extra blitzers and tee off on the undrafted rookie left tackle starting in place of Josh Simmons. At the same time, Bo Nix should excel against a secondary that features two rookies and a starter in L'Jarius Sneed, who has struggled to stay on the field ever since he left Kansas City two years ago. With so much pressure on the Chiefs' young players making their NFL debut on a national stage, the Broncos will pull off a close upset. I like that they are bringing back basically every starter from last year's team. Simultaneously, I'm hesitant to pick KC since their success depends so much on rookies and second-year guys playing well.

Prediction: Broncos 24 - 23 Chiefs
