Of all the matchups taking place this Sunday, the game between the Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills is arguably the most fascinating. On one side, you have the new-look Bills, who have a completely revamped coaching staff. Meanwhile, the Texans are hoping to get the most out of their new offensive and defensive weapons. Either way, both of these groups come into this year with the expectation of making the Super Bowl.

Buffalo experienced many changes after firing former head coach Sean McDermott and replacing him with offensive coordinator Joe Brady. Following an extensive coaching search, the belief in western New York is that Brady is the man who will help the Bills get over the hump and get to the Super Bowl.

"We wanted a highly intelligent, aggressive, and excellent communicator. We wanted alignment. Joe Brady is all of that and more," said general manager Brandon Beane during Brady's introductory press conference. "What I and our team learned through this process was Joe's vision for how he would run an entire football team... And what I also learned about Joe - through this process - was his love for Buffalo, his love for our community, and the entire Bills Mafia. Joe is the perfect fit for our team right now."

Brady acknowledged that the Bills are built to win a Super Bowl right now. Though hope is as high as it has ever been in Buffalo, he was not deterred by those expectations.

"I understand that I'm walking into this role in a much better position than coach McDermott did. I am not naive to that. I also understand that the expectations are higher as well," Brady explained. "I didn't take this job to shy away from expectations... I'm embracing it. I'm understanding it, and I'm meeting it full on. I know what I signed up for, and we're going to embrace it because no one rises to low expectations. I want what the city wants."

The good news is that Joe Brady gets to take over a team with a former MVP quarterback in Josh Allen. Even in what some might consider a down year, Allen still scored 39 touchdowns last season.

"I love that man. I'm only in this role because I had an opportunity to coach him, and I understand that," Brady said of Allen back in January. "I don't take that lightly. But I want him to get everything that he deserves as a player."

Despite the regular-season success that Josh Allen and the Bills have had, Buffalo has struggled to replicate those results in the playoffs. Because of those postseason issues, Allen comes into this year feeling like he has something to prove.

"I think I'll always have a chip on my shoulder," he told reporters on September 1st. "The way that last season ended, I actually wasn't happy with it. [I] haven't been happy with any of the seasons the way they've ended. So, gotta continue to find ways to keep getting better, keep pushing ourselves, and just keep grinding away and keep knocking at the door."

Unfortunately for Josh Allen, the Bills have to open the season on the road against the Houston Texans, whom he has had problems with. Including the playoffs, Allen is 1-4 against the Texans with a 72.7 passer rating.

"I think every game has its own flow. Got their own situations that you have to handle and take care of," he explained. "They've had some really good defenses in the past, and it's no different now. But, obviously, I want to go out there; I want to play the best that I can play and want to help our team win a football game, and that's obviously what it comes down to. If that's me completing 30 balls or handing it off 40 times, whatever it takes for us to win this game is what I'm willing to do."

As is often the case when discussing the Houston Texans, the conversation starts and ends with the defense, which was dominant during the 2025-26 campaign. Houston finished the year ranked second in points allowed per game (17.3).

“We want to dictate. Defenses, by nature, are reactionary,” Texans defensive coordinator Matt Burke told The Athletic. “The way we play our front is an attempt to be a little more proactive, be on the front foot. You have to react to what we’re doing. We’re not reading blocks. We’re getting off [the line of scrimmage], and you better be ready for us.”

Even with an exceptional defense, the offense caused the Texans' downfall during the 2026 Playoffs. Third-year quarterback C.J. Stroud had one of his worst games as a pro against the New England Patriots, when he threw four interceptions. While he played poorly, head coach DeMeco Ryans' confidence in Stroud has not wavered.

"What I love about CJ's growth and his progress is, just, he's been steady. He's been consistent. He's continued to grow," Ryans said during a media availability session on Wednesday. "Just seeing him grow as a leader, seeing the way he's operating in the offense. Like, man, I'm fired up to see him just go play. There's a lot [that's] been said about CJ. He's done a great job the past three years. We've made the playoffs every year because we've had a talented, young quarterback who's led us to the playoffs. I'm thankful to have him as our quarterback."

The Texans can't be concerned about their quarterback because they have to worry about stopping Josh Allen, which always presents a unique set of challenges. Though Houston has been able to do that previously, the team recognizes that it won’t be able to rest on its laurels when the season begins on Sunday.

"We can't hang our hat on past success. Past success is not going to automatically guarantee you future success. So, we've got to go out, and we have to earn it," Ryans explained. "And that's one thing that Josh and his offense is going to make you do. They're going to make you earn every play that you make. And that's how we like it. That's how it should be. Our guys are up for that challenge... Josh is a good player. He's going to make some plays. We have to just find a way to make more than he makes."

Prediction for Buffalo Bills (-1) @ Houston Texans

Due to the fact that this is a Week One matchup, it wouldn't be surprising to see both offenses look rusty out of the gate. After all, three of the four teams that we have seen play thus far have had some serious missteps on that side of the ball. Thankfully, neither one of these squads is breaking in a new offensive system, so it's not like we'll see the quarterbacks in this game completely disconnected from their pass catchers. However, the same cannot be said for the Bills' defense. This will be Buffalo's first game under new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, and that could lead to some playcalling confusion as well as potential blown coverages. Meanwhile, the Texans added multiple new key contributors to an already stacked unit, making one of the best defenses we have seen this decade that much more lethal. Houston will be able to neutralize the Bills on the ground, forcing them to abandon the run game early. From there, the pass rushers can tee off on Josh Allen and cause him to turn the ball over. The Texans haven't lost to Buffalo since 2021, and that won't change this weekend.
