The NBA announced that 29-year-old Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke passed away yesterday at the age of 29. LAPD sources told ABC News that Clarke died from a possible drug overdose and that there was no evidence of foul play.

Jason Collins, the NBA's first openly gay player, dead at 47

Former center Jason Collins, the first openly gay player in the history of the National Basketball Association, died yesterday at the age of 47 after a brief battle with brain cancer. He passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family.

"We are heartbroken to share that Jason Collins, our beloved husband, son, brother, and uncle, has died after a valiant fight with glioblastoma," Collins' family said in a statement released through the NBA. "Jason changed lives in unexpected ways and was an inspiration to all who knew him and to those who admired him from afar. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers over the past eight months, and for the exceptional medical care Jason received from his doctors and nurses. Our family will miss him dearly."

In 2013, Collins revealed to Sports Illustrated that he was gay, making him the first openly gay athlete to play in the Big Four North American sports leagues. During the 2013-14 season, he appeared in 22 games for the Brooklyn Nets, scoring 25 points on 24 shot attempts.

Collins had a 13-year career in the NBA, playing for the New Jersey Nets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, and Washington Wizards. He logged over 14,900 minutes played in 735 games, averaging 3.6 points and 3.7 assists.

“Craig is a tremendous coach and an even better person,” Chayka said in a statement. “This decision is more reflective of an organizational shift and an opportunity for a fresh start than it is an evaluation of Craig. We are grateful for his leadership, professionalism, and commitment to the Maple Leafs organization and wish Craig and his family nothing but the best moving forward.”

Berube was hired by the Maple Leafs in May of 2024. During his two-year stint with Toronto, he accumulated an 84-62-18 record.
