Zaccharie Risacher is heading to the Dallas Mavericks in one of the most intriguing moves of the NBA summer.
The former No.1 overall pick joins Dallas as part of a three-team trade which sends Lu Dort and Ryan Nembhard to Atlanta, while Oklahoma City receives three future second-round picks. The Mavericks also receive a protected 2027 second-rounder alongside Risacher.
For Dallas, this is a calculated swing on upside.
Risacher averaged 12.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists as a rookie, earning All-Rookie First Team honours. His production dropped to 9.6 points per game last season as injuries restricted him to 67 appearances and reduced his role during Atlanta’s playoff run.
But the talent remains obvious.
At 6ft 8in, Risacher offers size, movement and perimeter shooting on the wing. Dallas can place him alongside Cooper Flagg, giving the Mavericks two young forwards capable of switching defensively, running in transition and attacking without dominating the ball.
The trade also gives Dallas three former No.1 overall picks on the same roster: Risacher, Flagg and Kyrie Irving. That is more than any other current NBA team.
Risacher does not need to become the franchise star immediately. He needs to defend, cut, hit open threes and grow beside Flagg. If his confidence returns, Dallas may have bought low on a player whose ceiling remains far higher than last season’s numbers suggest.

The league has been spinning like a basketball on a fingertip.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s move to the Miami Heat has been the headline deal, immediately transforming Miami into an Eastern Conference heavyweight. Philadelphia acquired Jaylen Brown, with Paul George heading in the opposite direction to Boston in another seismic move.
The Western Conference has also been shaken up.
Ja Morant joined the Portland Trail Blazers, while Minnesota acquired LaMelo Ball and Josh Green in a four-team deal. The Timberwolves sent Julius Randle to Brooklyn and Naz Reid to Charlotte, making a bold bet that Ball can unlock a new level alongside Anthony Edwards.
The Lakers strengthened their interior by acquiring Walker Kessler from Utah for two unprotected first-round picks and two swaps. Phoenix added Miles Bridges, sending Grayson Allen, Royce O’Neale and draft capital to Charlotte.
Atlanta’s acquisition of Dort may prove especially important. Pairing one of the league’s toughest perimeter defenders with Dyson Daniels gives the Hawks a defensive backcourt capable of turning every possession into a full-court wrestling match.
The summer is not finished, but the board has already been flipped. Several contenders have gone all-in, while Dallas may have quietly landed one of the offseason’s smartest reclamation projects.
