2026 NBA Finals Preview and Prediction: New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs

The 2026 NBA Finals are set to begin tonight, and it will be a rematch from 1999, with the 53-29 New York Knicks representing the Eastern Conference and the 62-20 San Antonio Spurs from the West. Either the Spurs will claim their sixth Larry O'Brien Trophy, or the Knicks will win their first title in 53 years.
New York has looked like the best team in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, with a 12-2 postseason record that includes 11 straight wins. Most recently, they swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals to punch their ticket to the NBA Finals.
"Down the stretch, there was always a little bit of question whether we'd be able to get over the hump," said Knicks head coach Mike Brow following the 130-93 Game Four victory. "With about six or seven games to go - I started to see us playing some good basketball and do things that were more selfless and more sacrificing."
During the Knicks' historic postseason run, New York City has been electric. Considering this is the first time the Knickerbockers have made the finals in 27 years, the excitement is palpable.
“Man, our fans are fantastic,” Brown said on Monday. “Our fans are second to none. And to be able to do something in this city that unites the city or connects the city - in all facets, in all walks of life - is just, it's an unbelievable feeling because of the people.”
Obviously, the most important task the Knicks will face in this series is limiting the effectiveness of ascending Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama. New York guard and team leader Jalen Brunson knows that at 22 years old, Wembanyama is already doing things we haven't seen before in the NBA.
“Watching him, as a player, it's pretty unbelievable,” Brunson told the media on Tuesday. “[The] things he's able to do on both sides of the ball, people have never really seen before for a person at his size… As an opposing player, it’s something you constantly have to be on watch for. You just never know the things that he's capable of doing. That's why game planning and our gameplan discipline and our attention to details are so important when it comes to playing because he's pretty incredible.”
A defensive-minded player like New York's Mitchell Robinson will need to provide the Knicks with valuable minutes to slow down Wembanyama. Unfortunately, Robinson's status is currently listed as questionable for Game One after he underwent surgery to fix a broken finger last week. The good news is he did get some reps in at practice on Monday.
"He just did individual work today, so I'm waiting on the medical staff to let me know what the next step is," Mike Brown said to members of the media on June 1st. "Sometimes he plays 20 to 25 minutes. Sometimes he plays 13 to 15 minutes. No matter what, he's still in it."
The Knicks will need to lean into the next-man-up mentality, which has been key to their success in the 2026 Playoffs. Five different players have led the team in scoring at one point during this postseason. New York's ability to rely on different players at key moments has been invaluable.
“It's huge. I mean, we can start with Landry (Shamet). He played two or three great games against Philly. OG (Anunoby) comes back, and I say to Landry right before the game, ‘You're probably not going to play tonight.’ He says, ‘Don't worry about it, I'll be ready.’ And we needed him, you know?” Mike Brown explained. “The demeanor just never changes with those guys. Those guys are always supportive of whoever's in front of them. But the most important thing is they stay present in the moment, so when their number is called, they can go out there and perform and help us out.”
The San Antonio Spurs had a much more tumultuous path than the Knicks to get to this point. Last Saturday, they defeated the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder on the road in a Game Seven, 111-103, to earn a spot in the 2026 NBA Finals.
"The players did what they've been doing all year. And they met the biggest moment that's been in front of them up to this point," head coach Mitch Johnson said after the win. "And there's some pretty cool memories I'll take away from that."
Victor Wembanyama was overcome with emotion after the final buzzer sounded. The 2026 Western Conference Finals MVP once again became emotional while speaking with reporters during the postgame press conference.
"Winning the Larry O'Brien, it's a childhood dream. Having a real shot at it. Having a chance - a tangible chance - at winning it, realizing your dream, it's a lifetime chance," Wembanyama said. "It's hard to put into words. It's almost like the meaning of my life."
As good as Wemby was, it took a team effort to beat the Thunder. Forward Julian Champagnie hit six shots from beyond the arc on his way to a 20-point outing. Meanwhile, the play of the game - and quite possibly the season - was made by backup center Luke Kornet of all people, who had a remarkable chase-down block in the fourth quarter to keep the score 97-91 with about 6:30 to go in the game.
"That was big," Wembanyama said. "There's just so many big-time plays, so many. Guys stepping up... My life is amazing. And being with these guys - living these things with these guys that I love so, so, so much - it's amazing."
There is already some familiarity between the Knicks and the Spurs. New York and San Antonio faced off three times during the regular season, with the Knicks going 2-1 in those matchups. However, the Spurs won the most important game of the series, the NBA Cup Final, 134-132. Victor Wembanyama recognizes how good New York has been.
“It's a great team. It's a great team of experienced guys who are not here by chance, but by relentless effort over the years and very different career paths for all of them,” he said on Tuesday. “They're right where they're supposed to be, in my opinion. And all of them are going to be super hungry in their own way.”
This sentiment of respect was echoed by Mike Brown, who acknowledged how difficult a matchup this will be for the Knickerbockers.
"It's going to be tough," he said. "They're well-coached. They have an obviously tremendous player in Wemby. They're quote-unquote young, to a certain degree, but they have some really good veterans on the team that kind of uplift the young guys and give the young guys a lot of guidance."
"They're young, athletic, physical. They can do a little bit of everything: can shoot the ball, finish at the rim, defend at a high level," added Knicks forward Josh Hart. "So, obviously, Wemby's going to get a lot of attention in terms of gameplan and media and that, but you can't sleep on guys like De'Aaron (Fox) or (Stephon) Castle, (Dylan) Harper, (Julian) Champagnie because if you do that, it's going to be a long series. So, we've got to give those guys the respect that they deserve and come out focused."
Prediction for New York Knicks (+160) vs. San Antonio Spurs (-190)
It’s hard to be neutral when looking at this series because I’m a born-and-bred New Yorker. Though I root for the Milwaukee Bucks, I’ll admit that I want the Knicks to win this series. When the Knicks are good, New York City is an even better place than it already is, and I think it’s the best city in the world. I can't imagine the pandemonium that would ensue if the Knickerbockers were to win their first championship in 53 years. I’m picking the Knicks in this series, and there are several factors to back up my selection.
Firstly, New York is a more talented team. Granted, Victor Wembanyama is clearly the best player in this series. However, three of the five best players in the NBA Finals play for New York (Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and OG Anunoby). Even outside of this matchup, New York has the best starting five of any team in the playoffs. Statistics support this claim since five of the six leaders in plus/minus during the 2026 postseason play for the Knicks. When New York's starters are on the court, they’re blowing other teams out.
Speaking of Victor Wembanyama and Karl-Anthony Towns, KAT presents a unique challenge that Wemby hasn’t seen yet this postseason. Towns has been fantastic from beyond the arc. In fact, he's the ninth-most efficient three-point shooter in the 2026 NBA Playoffs (48.9%). KAT's ability to hurt the Spurs from deep will prevent Victor Wembanyama from simply camping out in the middle of the key as he has in other series. He’ll have to move out to the arc more to get a hand in KAT's face, which will open up the floor for the rest of New York's roster and allow them to get more easy drives to the basket, which is something that the Spurs have not had to deal with. It's a pick-your-poison situation for San Antonio. Either leave the lane open to guard KAT, or let KAT take uncontested threes, which is a recipe for disaster since he's hitting almost half of his shots from deep.
Also, New York has played perfect basketball in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, and there’s no defense for perfection. The Knicks rank first in offense (119.9 points per game) and defense (100.6 points per game allowed), while leading all teams in shooting efficiency, ranking first in three-point shooting (40%) and field goal percentage (51.5%). Even against an elite defense like San Antonio's, New York should still be able to make its shots at a high clip.
Game One will be massive for the Spurs. Because the Knicks have been blowing people out, it won't take much for them to regain their confidence after eight days of rest. If New York can get off to a hot start, they'll quickly establish a rhythm and coast to another win, which will only bolster their confidence. The Spurs MUST take an early lead if they want any shot at winning Game One. Even if San Antonio wins, it’ll need to be a convincing victory. If the Knicks lose a close contest, it’ll just build their confidence heading into Game Two, which will allow them to come out hot and steal a game on the road.
There will probably be something of a letdown for the Spurs after they defeated the best team in the NBA in Game Seven of the Western Conference Finals. That will not be the case for the Knicks, who have yet to be challenged in the playoffs since going down 2-1 to the Atlanta Hawks on April 23rd. New York knows that this is the best shot it will ever have to win a championship, but the Spurs are so young that they probably feel confident that they’ll have another shot at winning a title with this young core. That intense desperation will carry the Knickerbockers to a championship.
Prediction: Knicks win the series in six games.
