Earlier today, the New York Mets announced that they had fired manager Carlos Mendoza after three seasons with the team. The organization said that Andy Green will serve as the Mets' interim manager for the remainder of the year.

“Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis,” said New York's president of baseball operations, David Stearns. “Carlos’ impact on our players, staff, and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative. Unfortunately, we know we are falling short, and change is necessary to move forward.”

The Mets have had a disastrous start to the 2026 campaign, despite playoff expectations. Their 34-47 record gives them the third-lowest winning percentage in the National League (.420), ahead of only the San Francisco Giants (.413) and the Colorado Rockies (.395).

Mendoza was named the Mets' manager in November of 2023. During his tenure in New York, he amassed a 206-198 record while leading the Amazins' to an NLCS berth in 2024.

Too little, too late for New York

The Mets have been the most disappointing team in Major League Baseball for two years. Last season, they had the second-highest payroll in the Majors ($342 million). This year, they're the most expensive team in Baseball ($329 million). Despite all the money that has been poured into this team, they're 117-126 since the start of 2025, which is the 11th-worst record in the MLB. Something clearly had to change after the catastrophic start to the 2026 campaign, so Carlos Mendoza was fired.

This decision should've been made last off-season. The expectation in 2025 was for this team to at least make the playoffs, and they couldn't even do that despite a $329 million payroll! When you have a roster as talented as the Mets', and you fail to make the postseason, that’s a sign of poor coaching. Any competent organization with a $329 million payroll would've recognized that and made this change in 2025 after New York pissed away a four-game lead for the NL's last Wild Card spot in the final month of the regular season! Then again, the Mets are NOT a competent franchise.

So, they kept Mendoza, even though he had helped orchestrate one of the most embarrassing seasons in franchise history. Then, New York decided to spend EVEN MORE money. They added elite talent like former All-Star Bo Bichette and ace pitcher Freddy Peralta, because burning more money and pairing talented players with an inept manager will surely yield a better result. Shockingly (sarcasm), the opposite happened. Not only are the Mets nowhere close to competing for a playoff spot, but they're one of the worst teams in Baseball!

Carlos Mendoza was a bad manager, but it does feel like he's being scapegoated because the Mets are a trainwreck from top to bottom. David Stearns, who was touted as a team-building genius, acts like he's playing MLB The Show and is trying to buy a winning team, instead of building one. It’s evident now that Mendoza got lucky in his first season with the team and has been incapable of staying above water since the 2024 campaign. Juan Soto, who is supposed to be the $765 million face of the franchise, has not shown any leadership qualities as he deals with injuries, which have caused him to miss 19 games this season. On top of that, there are rumors that Soto does not get along with All-Star teammate Francisco Lindor, which makes sense when you realize the two of them have only appeared in NINE games together this season. Everything about the New York Mets is an embarrassment.

Mendoza deserved to be fired, but what's the plan from here? New York is 13 games below .500 and 9.5 games back from the last Wild Card spot in the NL. Even if Andy Green reignites the fire in this team, they're not going to actually make the playoffs. All they're going to do is give their fans some hope that things might be different next year while hurting their shot at landing a top pick in the MLB Draft Lottery. This is so typical of the Mets. Last week, the city was beaming with pride over the New York Knicks' first championship in 53 years. Eight days later, half the fans in New York are being subjected to watching the Mets waste away another season. They might not be the worst team in the MLB, but they're definitely the most embarrassing.
