1000 Guineas Day: Best bet, each-way selection and treble
Recommended bets include:
The winner of the first Classic of the season, the 2000 Guineas, is crowned on Saturday and the fillies get their shot at Group 1 glory at Newmarket on Sunday.
Newmarket hosts a seven-race card and the feature is obviously the 1000 Guineas, but there's also the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes, as well as some thoroughly competitive handicaps.
Here is everything you need to know about the action from HQ, as well as some tips to follow across the card.
Day 2 - Key info
First race: 13:30 Pretty Polly Stakes Feature race: 15:35 1000 Guineas
We get underway with the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes, a 1m2f contest for three-year-old fillies, which can be loosely considered as an Oaks trial. Seven runners have been declared and the favourite was last seen finishing fourth in a Group 1 at Longchamp last term.
Next up is the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes, run over an intermediate distance of 1m1f, and last season's Pretty Polly winner Falakeyah looks interesting. There are a couple of handicaps on the card and that includes a very valuable £100,000 heritage handicap over 1m6f.
Our feature race takes place at 15:35 and a large field of 19 has been declared. Aidan O'Brien has won this race seven times and he is set to saddle favourite Precise and the excellent True Love. Both fillies appear to have massive chances.
Best bet of the day
Precise to win the 1000 Guineas (15:35) @ 9/4
Ballydoyle's master trainer Aidan O'Brien has drawn a blank in this race since Mother Earth's 2021 victory, but Precise looks well set to end the drought. The daughter of Starspangledbanner was narrowly denied on debut and has since won four in-a-row.
She appreciated the step up to 7f when winning a Cork maiden with plenty in hand. Victory in a Group 3 at Goodwood was next on the agenda, taking another step forward.
Ronan Whelan was on board when she contested the Moyglare Stud Stakes, her first start in Group 1 company and she got the better of Karl Burke's Venetian Sun on that occasion.
O’Brien's filly was very impressive in the Fillies' Mile and she is therefore hard to oppose.
Best each-way bet of the day
Miss Justice in the Dahlia Stakes (14:20) @ 16/1
Brian Meehan runs five-year-old Miss Justice here and she brings some smart form to the table. Very lightly raced for her age, she won a Listed contest at Salisbury in August and improved again to finish second by a neck in a Group 3 contest here over a furlong further.
That form is amongst the best on offer here and this will be her first start for Meehan.
There is less between her and some of the more fancied runners than the prices suggest and she looks more than capable of running into a place at the very least.
1000 Guineas Day acca
It is hard to say no to an accumulator and fear not, as we have you covered. Here are three strong fancies across the card and they combine to form a juicy treble.
Bet 1: Back Esna to win the Pretty Polly Stakes (13:45) @ 11/10
Esna showed some decent form at two and there were signs of promise when second on debut at Sandown. Taking a step forward to get off the mark next time, she was fourth behind Diamond Necklace last time and middle-distances should suit.
Bet 2: Back Precise to win the 1000 Guineas (15:35) @ 9/4
Precise's rivals have more than a little bit to find in order to reach the level of form that Aidan O'Brien's filly showed as a juvenile and a lack of fitness appears to be her biggest danger.
Bet 3: Back Study Of Words to win the Hkjc World Pool Handicap (17:20) @ SP
Charlie Appleby is always the man to follow at Newmarket and the local trainer has sustained a very healthy strike-rate over a long period of time.
Study Of Words won a maiden here last season by 15 lengths and a mark of 95 looks potentially generous.
