The World Cup has turned into a nightmare for Tunisia and a third heavy defeat looks likely when they play a Netherlands side seeking to secure top spot in Group F.
Tunisia began their campaign with a dismal 5-1 defeat to Sweden, against whom they had only six shots on goal and generated a meagre 0.27 expected-goals total, and things have gone from bad to worse ever since.
Sabri Lamouchi was sacked the day after the heavy defeat to the Swedes in Monterrey and was hastily replaced by Herve Renard, who masterminded Saudi Arabia's 2-1 win over Argentina in Qatar four years ago. But the Frenchman’s arrival made little difference as the Carthage Eagles were swept aside 4-0 by Japan on their return to the Estadio BBVA.
Tunisia managed just two shots against the Japanese, who took just four minutes to open the scoring through Daichi Kamada, setting the tone for another dreadful evening. Things are unlikely to get any better in their final act of a miserable campaign, either, with the Netherlands unable to take their foot off the gas in pursuit of top spot in Group F.
Ronald Koeman’s side lead the group on goals scored heading into the final round of fixtures, so they will be eager to emulate their rivals for first place, Japan and Sweden, and put Tunisia to the sword to ensure they finish top of the pile and claim a more favourable route through the knockout rounds.
The Oranje are more than capable of doing just that. They scored twice in an opening draw against Japan before putting five past Sweden last time, when doubles for Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo illustrated their flexibility going forward.
It is the latter who looks the most likely to find the net against Tunisia on Thursday night. Gakpo has had seven shots and five on target in his first two games at the tournament and his brace against Sweden took his international tally to 23 goals in 52 appearances.
Four of his 23 goals for the Dutch have come in his last three international outings and he should get acres of space to cut in off the left wing against a woeful Tunisian defence. Gakpo seems unlikely to be the only goalscorer for the Oranje, either.
The Dutch have scored nine goals in their last three games and will be looking to take advantage of the rock-bottom morale in the Tunisian camp. The underdogs have lost four games on the spin and have conceded 15 times in that run.
The plane home can probably not come soon enough given the chastening experience they have endured in North America and it could be another long 90 minutes for the African nation in Kansas City.
