The opening knockout round at the World Cup was full of shocks, entertainment and stories as big names like Germany and the Netherlands were sent packing.

Co-hosts Mexico, Canada and the United States are all still going, while Argentina survived a massive scare against surprise package Cape Verde.

Ahead of the last 16, we have predicted the winners of each tie and how the quarter-final bracket will shape up.

Canada vs Morocco (Saturday, 6pm)

Morocco outclassed a decent Netherlands side in their opening knockout game and perhaps shouldn't have needed extra-time and penalties to get the verdict. They also went toe-to-toe with Brazil in their first match.

The Canadians toiled for long spells against South Africa, whose stand-off attitude didn't help, but should make a contest of this before ultimately losing out to the 2022 semi-finalists.

Score prediction: Canada 1-2 Morocco

Paraguay vs France (Saturday, 10pm)

Paraguay stifled the Germans but in truth Die Mannschaft were far too predictable and passive in their approach.

France by contrast are anything but easy to defend against with a glittering attack comprising Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembele. Les Bleus have scored 13 goals in four games, winning them all by more than one goal, and this tussle in Philadelphia has the potential of being a mismatch.

Score prediction: Paraguay 0-4 France

Brazil vs Norway (Sunday, 9pm)

Brazil had to come from behind to overturn Japan in the last 32 and now Selecao must try to arrest a run of six knockout stage World Cup losses against European opposition. Norway are proving to be entertainers, with both teams scoring in all four of their games.

Between them Bruno Guimaraes and Martin Odegaard have seven assists already and they are key operators.

Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti knows how to win these sorts of games and Marquinhos and Gabriel may cut off the supply-line to Erling Haaland, who has five goals in three games so far, sufficiently to see them progress.

Score prediction: Brazil 2-1 Norway

Mexico vs England (Monday, 1am)

After the drama of nearly having the kick-off time moved due to a poor weather forecast, Mexico and England proceed as planned at the Azteca.

Thomas Tuchel suggests England "cannot physically adapt" to playing the match at more than 7,000 feet above sea level and labelled it a "big disadvantage".

Mexico haven't conceded a goal in four games and boast a perfect winning record. England have underperformed and many are suggesting they'll come unstuck on high ground. The Three Lions are a step up on what Mexico have met so far and can grind their way onwards.

Score predictions: Mexico 0-1 England

Portugal vs Spain (Monday 8pm)

An Iberian derby that whets the appetite. Spain have twice eliminated Portugal from previous major tournaments when they have met, though this is the first such encounter since Euro 2012.

Luis de la Fuente's side are growing stronger with each game. Portugal were fortunate to get past Croatia and have the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes misfiring to a large degree.

Score prediction: Spain 2-0 Portugal

USA vs Belgium (Tuesday, 1am)

Belgium somehow got out of their last 32 clash with Senegal as winners despite trailing 0-2 with 85 minutes on the clock. There was some threat of in-fighting among the Red Devils and they have largely disappointed so far.

The USA are in good shape after three wins from four, their only loss coming against Turkey in a contest that had no impact on the group standings. They have scored ten goals and might put this misfiring Belgian squad of its misery, with Christian Pulisic likely to step up in the absence of the suspended Folarin Balogun.

Score prediction: USA 3-1 Belgium

Argentina vs Egypt (Tuesday, 5pm)

Argentina survived an unexpected extra time battle with Cape Verde in the last 32 and their road to the last eight is now blocked by Egypt in what should prove a path of little resistance for the defending champions.

Lionel Messi continues to thrive and Lautaro Martinez is starting to go through the gears. Egypt scraped past Australia despite a dream early goal and the Pharaohs run may end now.

Score prediction: Argentina 3-0 Egypt

Switzerland vs Colombia (Tuesday, 9pm)

The final act of the last 16 and this clash in Vancouver is tough to call. Both Switzerland and Colombia have impressed at stages already. They can serve up an entertaining contest.

Score prediction: Switzerland 2-2 Colombia
