Team News

Johan Manzambi was awarded a start against Canada and impressed once again, so the 20-year-old is expected to retain his starting berth, with Ruben Vargas, Djibril Sow and Breel Embolo joining him in Switzerland’s attack.

The Swiss are expected to remain unchanged after beating Canada 2-1 and topping Group B.

Amine Gouiri could spearhead a 4-2-3-1 setup for Algeria, with Vladimir Petkovic also expected to name an unchanged lineup from the one that drew with Austria.

Manchester City full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri may have to settle for a spot on the bench again, with the more defensive Jaouen Hadjam preferred, while former Citizens’ man Riyad Mahrez provides the star quality for the Desert Warriors.

The stats

Both teams have scored in Switzerland’s last five matches.

Algeria’s three World Cup matches have averaged four goals per game.

Switzerland’s only defeats in their last 20 games have come against Spain and Germany.

La Nati have won 10 of these 20 fixtures.

Algeria have scored 10 goals in their last five fixtures, only failing to find the net in one of these.

Johan Manzambi, Breel Embolo and Ruben Vargas have 10 goal contributions between them at the World Cup.

Prediction

Another fantastic performance from Freiburg youngster Johan Manzambi, who was awarded a start after his heroics from the bench against Bosnia & Herzegovina, helped Switzerland to a 2-1 win over co-hosts Canada and, after topping Group B, they now have their sights set on Algeria in Vancouver.

After being frustrated by a last-gasp equaliser against Qatar, La Nati turned on the style in the second half of their meeting with Bosnia & Herzegovina and, with their only defeats in their last 20 games coming against European heavyweights Spain and Germany, they are justified favourites against Group J’s third-place finishers.

The Desert Warriors opened their World Cup campaign with an unsurprising defeat against defending champions Argentina before beating Jordan in their second group fixture.

A six-goal thriller against Austria followed, and that attacking spirit could see them give Switzerland a good game in Vancouver.

Algeria have scored five goals in this tournament and have found the net 10 times in their last five matches. With Switzerland conceding in eight of their last nine, Petkovic’s side will fancy their chances of troubling the Swiss defence.

However, they have shipped three goals against both Austria and Argentina and face an in-form group of Switzerland attackers.

Manzambi, Embolo and Vargas have six goals and four assists between them at this World Cup and the favourites have scored 12 goals in their last five assignments.

They should be able to clinch their first knockout-stage victory since the 1938 World Cup, but do not expect them to have it all their own way against a plucky Algeria side.

Score prediction: Switzerland 3-1 Algeria
