South Africa – 500/1 Canada – 125/1

Team News

Both teams appear to have come through the group stage unscathed. Suspensions have been a problem for South Africa since their opening loss to Mexico brought two red cards.

Themba Zwane serves the last match of a three-game ban, but Teboho Mokoena returns after two yellows forced him to miss the win over South Korea.

Stephen Eustaquio and Alfie Jones are carrying minor knocks for Canada but should be fit, Alphonso Davies has been on the bench for all three games but may see game time now.

The stats

South Africa boss Hugo Broos becomes the oldest manager to take charge in a World Cup knockout game at 74.

Bafana Bafana have recorded just one victory in their last eight games (D4, L3).

Canada have lost just one of their last 11 games (W4, D6) and the Maple Leafs have kept nine clean sheets in their last 14 games.

Jonathan David scored a hat-trick for Canada in the 6-0 win against Qatar.

Three have been six red cards in Canada's last 10 games, while there were three in South Africa's tournament opener against Mexico.

Prediction

Canada have lost their home advantage, but the co-hosts can stay in the World Cup despite making the trip to LA to face South Africa.

Jesse Marsch's side gave as good as they got in the 2-1 loss against Switzerland. They had more corners, more shots, more shots on target and won the xG battle with 1.66 despite having 45 per cent possession.

They had dominated Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening game but drew 1-1 and they thrashed an ill-disciplined Qatar 6-0 in between times.

In Jonathan David they have an elite forward, whose calmness in front of goal is aided by a strong work ethic.

Marsch's side will press South Africa eagerly and have the pace down the wings to hurt Bafana Bafana, whose win over South Korea was their first in eight games.

Broos' side is largely made up of players based domestically, whereas Canada have a strong core plying their trade in Europe.

They have the know-how to keep this tight and their defence can shut South Africa out, while in Juventus forward David they have a goalscorer that can send them to the last 16.

Score prediction: South Africa 0-2 Canada
