Scotland vs Morocco Match Preview
By Aidan Perkins
Scotland marked their return to the World Cup with a nervy win over Haiti — but things are about to get much tougher for Steve Clarke's side.
John McGinn's deflected first-half strike helped the Scots secure their first win at a World Cup in 36 years, but the Tartan Army will know that their side need to show vast improvement with games against Morocco and Brazil to come. Scotland went into the tournament — the nation's first global finals since 1998 — following a rout of Curacao and morale-boosting 4-0 friendly win over Bolivia.
However, they failed to deliver a similar free-flowing display against Haiti, instead largely relying on defensive grit to keep the islanders at bay. Scotland were fortunate Haiti missed several presentable opportunities to equalise in Foxborough but, ultimately, a victory was all that mattered.
The Tartan Army will again descend on the Gillette Stadium in their hordes on Friday in the hope of a repeat success, but a much more savvy opponent lies in wait. Morocco became the first African nation to reach the last four of a World Cup in Qatar four years ago and they have gone from strength to strength since.
The Atlas Lions are aiming to prove they belong among international football's elite this summer, and they were superb in a 1-1 draw against Brazil in New York, where they were unfortunate not to win. A side containing PSG star Achraf Hakimi, Manchester United full-back Noussair Mazraoui and Real Madrid's Brahim Diaz is one to be feared and Scotland are likely to have to suffer in and out of possession in their second group game.
Diaz, in particular, was a constant threat against Brazil and won the Golden Boot at this winter's Africa Cup of Nations. He laid on Morocco's goal in their opener and also had three shots without any success. His luck may turn against Scotland, though, and he can get on the scoresheet.
Morocco have lost only once in the last nine months — to Senegal in a highly controversial Afcon final that was later awarded to them — and they are as dogged without the ball as they are brilliant with it. Scotland also have talented players in their squad, with McGinn, Scott McTominay and Andy Robertson leading the way, but they do not have as much depth as the Moroccans, who can claim victory and a clean sheet in Boston.
Haiti are ranked 84th on Fifa's latest list whereas Morocco are seventh, so it will be a major concern to Clarke that his side only had two shots on target in the entirety of their Group C opener. Morocco, meanwhile, mustered 14 attempts against Brazil, two more than Carlo Ancelotti's Selecao, underlining the scale of the task facing Scotland in New England.
