Scotland have fallen short of reaching the World Cup knockout rounds on eight successive occasions but they have an opportunity to end that sequence of failure when taking on Brazil in the Group C fixture at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

A place in the round of 32 looks tantalisingly close for Scotland, who could make absolutely sure of advancement if they were to defeat Brazil for the first time in 11 attempts.

But the Scots will be hoping to make a stronger start than was the case in last Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Morocco.

Steve Clarke’s side were behind after just two minutes of the Morocco match and they need to prepare themselves for a fast start from Brazil, who are growing into the tournament.

Brazil have won their group at each of the last 11 World Cups and are hoping to keep that run going by targeting a wide-margin victory.

Team news

Aaron Hickey (knock) and Scott McKenna (calf) missed out against Morocco but Lewis Ferguson (fatigue) is expected to continue despite having his training load managed during the build up to the game.

Neymar (calf) should be available although he might be restricted to some minutes off the bench but Raphinha suffered a hamstring strain in the victory over Haiti and faces a spell on the sidelines.

Rayan could make his first start of the tournament and Matheus Cunha should get another start up front as he aims to build on his double against the Haitians.

The stats

Brazil have scored two or more goals in four of their last five matches.

Six of Brazil's last eight games have featured less than four goals.

Brazil have won their last six matches against Scotland.

Scotland have lost three of their last six matches by a 1-0 scoreline.

Scotland have scored in six of their last seven competitive games.

Prediction

Brazil announced themselves at the World Cup with a convincing 3-0 victory over Haiti, but they face a sterner test against Scotland and may have to settle for a narrower margin of success.

For Brazil to hold onto first place they may need to defeat Scotland by multiple goals.

However, their first order of business is to put another three points on the board, and that should be achieved against a solid, unspectacular Scotland side.

Scotland got themselves into a strong position with the 1-0 win over Haiti, but their limitations were exposed by Morocco, who defeated them without having to face a shot on target.

Steve Clarke’s side are a threat from set-pieces and may add to their goal tally, but a narrow defeat looks likely against Brazil, who should have the better of the exchanges in open play.
