Netherlands vs Morocco Match Preview: Oranje and Atlas Lions to put on a show
The Netherlands and Morocco have performed well at recent tournaments but Tuesday's last-32 tie in Monterrey will mark the end of the road for one of them at this World Cup.
The Dutch topped Group F, drawing 2-2 with Japan on matchday one, then routing Sweden 5-1 and beating Tunisia 3-1. Their dubious reward is a round-of-32 clash with Morocco, who are unbeaten in 32 internationals in 90 minutes and gave Brazil a scare in their Group C opener.
The Atlas Lions burst out of the blocks, racking up a dozen shots at goal in the first 30 minutes, and they were unfortunate to only draw 1-1 with the five-time world champions. Morocco needed less than two minutes to break through against Scotland on matchday two before showcasing their defensive strength.
The Scots did not manage a shot on target in that 1-0 defeat and Morocco completed a successful Group C campaign with a 4-2 win over Haiti. The North Africans reached the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup, eliminating European powerhouses Spain and Portugal before losing to France.
They are outsiders against the Netherlands, who lost on penalties to winners Argentina at the last World Cup before making the Euro 2024 semi-finals. A late Ollie Watkins goal condemned the Oranje to a 2-1 defeat against England but they arrived at the World Cup in good heart.
Their first team is packed with Premier League stars, including Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo, and Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey, who scored three goals in their last two group games. There have been goals at both ends in six of the Netherlands' last seven games, including all three Group F matches, and that trend should continue against Morocco.
Despite losing 5-1 to the Dutch on matchday two, Sweden had eight shots on target to their opponents' seven so Morocco should be confident of creating chances. The Netherlands have not looked entirely at ease defending crosses into their box, whether from open play or set pieces.
And Morocco forwards Ismail Saibari and Brahim Diaz are capable of conjuring up moments of attacking magic. Saibari scored in all three group games while Real Madrid's Diaz, the leading scorer at January's Africa Cup of Nations, gave his side an early lead in their final pre-tournament friendly, a 1-1 draw with Norway.
Morocco's Achraf Hakimi and the Netherlands' Denzel Dumfries are two of the most exciting attacking full-backs in world football. Dumfries looks an appealing bet to score or assist a goal on Tuesday as he claimed five goal contributions in six starts during World Cup qualifying.
The Inter star set up two of the Oranje's five goals against Sweden and had four shots, two of them on target, against Tunisia on matchday three. Dumfries is looking fresh after an injury-hit 2025-26 season for the Italian champions, for whom he scored five goals in 19 starts in Serie A and the Champions League.
