Mexico v England preview: Azteca test may spell the end for Three Lions
By Tom McGarry
England scraped past DR Congo in the round of 32 thanks to a late double from captain Harry Kane, but they will have to play much better to find a way past Mexico at their Estadio Azteca fortress.
The co-hosts have not put a foot wrong at the tournament to date, winning all four of their matches, three of which have taken place at the Azteca, without conceding a goal. The latest, a 2-0 triumph over Ecuador, saw El Tri end a 40-year wait to win a World Cup knockout game and there is plenty of positivity surrounding the team heading into their last-16 clash with England.
That has not always been the case. The jury was out on Mexico's 26-man squad and head coach Javier Aguirre heading into the World Cup, and they were even booed off following March's goalless draw with Portugal, with many Mexico supporters railing against the perceived pragmatic approach. However, they cannot argue with their nation's results. Mexico are unbeaten in their 12 matches in 2026, winning ten times in total and each of their last seven.
El Tri have conceded only two goals in their unbeaten sequence and with a longer rest period, a rapturous home support behind them and a proven ability to play at altitude, they will fancy their chances of knocking out an England team who have reached the last 16 without ever really getting going. A strong second-half display saw the Three Lions open their campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia, but they were then held to a dismal goalless draw by Ghana, edged past a Panama side already set to head home after the group stage, and needed Kane to spare their blushes against DR Congo.
The Three Lions trailed for well over an hour in Atlanta before captain Kane finally found a way past the inspired Lionel Mpasi in the Congo goal. England have reached the last two European Championship finals and the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the last two World Cups, but they will have to step it up significantly if they want to replicate that success in North America over the next couple of weeks.
With Kane, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice in their ranks, England undoubtedly have the world-class talent to do just that. And most Mexico fans would concede they are a better side man for man, but there are also gaps in Tuchel's team, most notably at right-back with Reece James and Jarell Quansah having both missed the win over DR Congo.
Both players are in contention to return at the Azteca but how fit they are remains to be seen. Regardless, England have looked fragile at the back throughout the tournament. Brian Cipenga exploited England's right-back weakness to score DR Congo's goal in the round of 32 and, in Julian Quinones, Mexico also have a left winger in supreme form. Quinones has scored three goals at the World Cup, including the opening strike of the tournament in Mexico's win over South Africa, while he grabbed a goal and an assist in the round-of-32 victory over Ecuador.
Mexico have twice reached the World Cup quarter-finals previously, in both 1970 and 1986 when they also hosted the tournament. They have won 70 of their 89 competitive matches at the Azteca, losing only twice, and the co-hosts may leave England's supporters wondering if the long wait for a trophy will ever end.
