Julian Quinones anytime goalscorer — odds @12/5 - Quinones leads Mexico's scoring charts with two goals at the tournament and, having netted seven times in his last five matches for Al-Qadsiah, he looks well placed to add to his tally against a leaky Ecuador.

Mexico vs Ecuador Match Preview

By James Mason

It has been an excellent World Cup for co-hosts Mexico, who were one of only three teams to progress from the group stage with a perfect record, and El Tri have their sights set on the last 16.

The home support for Mexico has been nothing short of outstanding and a hostile reception awaits Ecuador at the Estadio Azteca, a stadium where the Mexicans defeated South Africa and the Czech Republic during the group stage. Both of those victories were accompanied by clean sheets and defensive resilience is something Mexico have shown in spades, with the triumph over South Korea in between at the Estadio Akron in Zapopan also a shutout win.

Mexico have won six matches in a row and five of those have seen the opposition blank, with Serbia the only side to score during that period in El Tri's final World Cup warm-up. Javier Aguirre's side have also been ruthless in the final third, scoring six goals in the group stage, while they have failed to find the net in just one of their last 12 matches.

These two nations did draw 1-1 in a friendly in October 2025, but Aguirre's men have improved markedly since that stalemate and Ecuador are expected to struggle in Mexico City. Ecuador failed to score in their first two group games, losing 1-0 to the Ivory Coast before a 0-0 draw with debutants Curacao, before managing to clinch a 2-1 victory over Germany to secure their last-32 place.

However, Germany were already assured of top spot before that game and manager Julian Nagelsmann perhaps missed the opportunity to give other players in his squad some playing time, with his regular starters lacking motivation given there was no jeopardy heading into the contest. Those two goals against the Germans marked just the third time Ecuador have scored at least twice in their previous 16 matches, while they have fired a blank seven times during that period.

Against an in-form Mexico who have faced just five shots on target in the tournament, Ecuador could be in for a tough contest and an exit at the last-32 stage looks likely. There is plenty of attacking talent in Mexico's squad and one player who has impressed is Julian Quinones, who leads his country's scoring charts at this World Cup with two goals.

Quinones scored the opening goal of the tournament in the 2-0 win over South Africa before finding the back of the net in the comfortable 3-0 victory over the Czechs. Given the 29-year-old scored seven goals in his last five matches for Al-Qadsiah in the 2025-26 season, it is perhaps no surprise to see him performing so well on the international stage.

Facing an Ecuador side whose measly two clean sheets in their last seven games came against Curacao and Guatemala, Quinones looks capable of adding to his World Cup tally.
