Some of us may feel this is a throwback to France 1998. The glorious French heat, the Brazilian Samba, and the buzz the Scots brought to the tournament. This time, Scotland’s World Cup campaign has already had its bumps and bruises. A win over Haiti gave Steve Clarke’s side the start they wanted, before Morocco shut them out in a tight second group game.

Now comes Brazil.

It is the glamour fixture, the toughest test and a huge opportunity for Scotland to put themselves firmly in the mix for the knock-out stages. Victory would guarantee a top-two finish in Group C, while a draw would leave Clarke’s men lingering in third, unsure of their fate. A reminder that the eight best third-placed teams qualify for the last 32 based on a ranking that, in order, takes into account: points, goal difference, goals scored, fair-play status and FIFA ranking.

Brazil arrive with four points from their opening two games. They drew with Morocco before putting three past Haiti, with Matheus Cunha scoring twice and Vinicius Junior also on target.

Scotland have never beaten Brazil in eight meetings, but there have been moments to savour. David Narey’s famous strike in Seville gave Scotland an early lead at the 1982 World Cup, even if Brazil eventually ran out 4-1 winners.

It is going to be a huge match, with Scotland's World Cup tournament on the line. Here is everything you need to know.

Scotland vs Brazil team news

Steve Clarke has a few fitness concerns ahead of Scotland’s biggest game of the tournament so far. Scott McKenna, Aaron Hickey and Lewis Ferguson were absent from training at the weekend, although all three could still return to contention.

Clarke is expected to keep faith with a cautious shape, with Scott McTominay and John McGinn again carrying much of Scotland’s attacking threat behind Che Adams. The risk and reward relationship needs to be balanced against such a flamboyant side.

Brazil will be without Raphinha after the winger picked up a hamstring injury against Haiti. Neymar is available after recovering from a calf issue but may have to settle for a place on the bench, while teenage forward Rayan is in contention to replace Raphinha on the right.

Scotland vs Brazil predicted line-ups

Scotland XI: Gunn; Patterson, Hendry, Hanley, Robertson, Tierney; Christie, Ferguson; McTominay, McGinn; Adams.

Brazil XI: Alisson; Danilo, Marquinhos, Gabriel, Douglas Santos; Guimaraes, Casemiro; Rayan, Paqueta, Vinicius Jr; Cunha.
