Manchester United have been the dominant force when it comes to clashes with Sunderland but the Black Cats have produced some memorable performances over the years.

While United were often the ones challenging for Premier League titles, some of Sunderland's biggest scalps against the Red Devils have come while the Wearsiders were battling to avoid the drop.

Looking back at the head-to-heads between these sides, here are three of Sunderland's top displays against Manchester United.

Manchester United 2-1 Sunderland (a.e.t) (3-3 agg) (1-2 pens) - January 22, 2014

It might seem strange to start with a scoreline that ended in defeat for the Black Cats at the end of regular time but this was in fact a Carabao Cup semi-final at Old Trafford and one Sunderland won 2-1 on penalties.

The Black Cats led 2-1 after the first leg at the Stadium of Light thanks to an own goal from Ryan Giggs and a penalty from Fabio Borini.

Nemanja Vidic had scored in that first leg for United, who struck first in the semi-final second leg thanks to a goal from another defender in the form of Jonny Evans.

Having to withstand the pressure throughout the game against David Moyes' side, Sunderland struck in extra-time in the 119th minute thanks to a goal from former United player Phil Bardsley.

A powerful strike from just outside the area looked like it was well covered by United goalkeeper David de Gea.

However, the Spaniard produced an absolute howler to allow the ball to skip through his hands and into the net.

Sunderland's celebrations were short-lived, as Javier Hernandez struck just a minute later to restore parity on aggregate and force a dreaded penalty shootout.

With poor penalties from both sides, it was Sunderland's Vito Mannone who proved to be the hero, denying Rafael and Adnan Januzaj to help the Black Cats win the shootout 2-1 and reach the final at Wembley.

Manchester United 0-1 Sunderland - May 3, 2014

In a season in which Sunderland became only the second team to avoid relegation despite being bottom of the table at Christmas, the Wearsiders under manager Gus Poyet picked up three huge points at Old Trafford.

Months on from their aforementioned Carabao Cup semi-final success in Manchester, Sunderland were back at Old Trafford and this time searching for the points to help them avoid relegation to the Championship.

Moyes had already departed and it was Giggs who was now in the dugout for United ahead of Sunderland's arrival.

Sebastian Larsson proved to be the hero on this occasion and his first-half goal was enough to give the Black Cats their first win at Old Trafford since 1968 and take them to the brink of safety with two games of the season remaining.

Looking at the most recent game of these three selected, Sunderland enjoyed a day to remember at the Stadium of Light against Manchester United in the 2015-16 season.

Sam Allardyce's side did a number on Louis van Gaal's men up in the north east with an impressive 2-1 victory.

Wahbi Khazri got Sunderland off to a flying start with a goal in the third minute, before Anthony Martial levelled the score before half-time.

Once again, De Gea was the unlikely hero for Sunderland as his own goal in the 82nd minute secured all three points for the Black Cats.

Sunderland went on to secure Premier League survival by finishing two points ahead of bitter rivals Newcastle United, who suffered the heartbreak of relegation.
