Sunderland have enjoyed a fine first season back in the Premier League and finish up at home to Chelsea.

Sunderland have a chance of securing European football next season which could mark a fantastic final day of the Premier League campaign for Regis Le Bris' men.

The Black Cats have enjoyed a fantastic return to the top-fight and they have defied pre-season expectations, which had the Wearsiders as favourites to return to the Championship.

The Stadium of Light will be packed full of expectant fans when Chelsea head for the banks of the River Wear for the final game of the Premier League campaign and, while the Black Cats are very much looking to the future, we have picked out five memorable season endings of the past.

Preston North End 0-3 Sunderland (May 8, 2023)

Millwall were 3-1 up against Blackburn on the final day of the 2022-23 Championship season, with a spot in the play-offs within their grasp.

Sunderland needed to beat Preston to steal a top-six position, but, with the Lions seemingly in an uncatchable position, the cause looked lost for the Black Cats.

However, the Bermondsey boys somehow blew their lead to lose 4-3 to Rovers and that result sent the Sunderland fans into delirium and into the play-offs.

It was not to be for the Black Cats in the post-season, but it was a memorable climax to the Championship campaign.

Wimbledon 1-0 Sunderland (May 11, 1997)

A 1-0 loss to Wimbledon at Selhurst Park was not a memorable result for Sunderland, but the climax of the 1996-97 season saw a huge change for the club.

The Black Cats said farewell to Roker Park, their home from 1898 to 1997, to set sail for the Stadium of Light.

The final Roker Park league contest had come against Everton the week before, but the loss to the Dons marked the final action of a campaign that said goodbye to the iconic venue.

Luton Town 0-5 Sunderland (May 6, 2007)

A hugely memorable season for Sunderland, which saw Roy Keane's men secure promotion to the Premier League.

The Black Cats travelled to Kenilworth Road, already promoted, but needing a point to edge Birmingham City to the Championship title.

Sunderland steamrollered their way back to the Premier League and crushed the Hatters 5-0 to be crowned champions.

Tranmere Rovers 2-0 Sunderland (May 5, 1996)

Not a memorable final day result, but it did bring to an end another promotion winning campaign for Sunderland.

The Black Cats had been enduring a difficult period, but Peter Reid's arrival kick-started an amazing turnaround, putting together an 18-match unbeaten run to be crowned second-tier champions.

The loss to Tranmere Rovers ended that brilliant streak, but the Premier League beckoned for Sunderland.

Notts County 3-1 Sunderland (May 8, 1993)

A 3-1 loss at Notts County was not a result to celebrate, but Sunderland fans entered the pitch in jubilation following the final whistle at Meadow Lane.

Results elsewhere meant that the Black Cats had avoided relegation to the third tier as the Wearsiders had survived on goal difference.
