Could Xabi Alonso become the fourth Chelsea manager to win the Premier League title?

Chelsea begin a new era at the start of the 2026/27 season with Xabi Alonso now in charge at Stamford Bridge.

It goes without saying the Blues will want to improve considerably on last term’s 10th-placed Premier League finish – and might they even go as far as challenging for a sixth Premier League title?

When did Chelsea last win the Premier League title?

It’s been almost a decade since Chelsea tasted Premier League success, last winning the title in the 2016/17 campaign – Antonio Conte’s first at the helm.

That was the Blues’ second triumph in three years, having also topped the table in 2014/15 under Jose Mourinho – who led the West London giants to their first two Premier League crowns back-to-back in 2004/05 and 2005/06.

Chelsea’s other Premier League title came under Carlo Ancelotti in the 2009/10 season.

Chelsea’s 2016/17 season in short

Chelsea won the 2016/17 title with 93 points – the joint sixth-most in Premier League history – finishing seven points ahead of London rivals Tottenham in second place.

Winning 30 of their 38 games, Conte’s Blues became the first side to be crowned champions while regularly deploying a back three since Everton 54 years earlier.

Diego Costa finished as Chelsea’s top scorer with 20 goals in what proved to be his final season at the club, followed by Eden Hazard on 16.

That two-pronged attacking threat coupled with their robust defence – they conceded the second-fewest goals in the division (33), with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois keeping 16 clean sheets to claim the Golden Glove – got the Blues over the line, wrapping up the title with two games to go.

How did Chelsea do the next season?

Chelsea were unable to retain their crown in 2017/18 – ultimately falling well short as they finished fifth, missing out on Champions League qualification.

Having failed to adequately replace Costa, Conte’s Blues scored only 62 goals – 23 fewer than they had in 2016/17.

That being said, no one got anywhere near Pep Guardiola’s rampant Manchester City, who stormed to the title with 100 points – which remains the highest tally in Premier League history.
