Why Andy Diouf Fits Inter’s Midfield Vision

Andy Diouf’s arrival at Inter this summer followed Cristian Chivu’s request for a midfielder of his profile, with sporting director Piero Ausilio moving decisively to close the deal for a reported €25 million including bonuses.

According to Sky Sport, the 22-year-old’s summer odyssey took him from Burnley’s radar in June to Napoli’s in July before Inter’s blitz in August sealed his signature from Lens.

Standing 187cm and comfortable carrying the ball through midfield, Diouf fits the profile Chivu had been searching for: a mezzala capable of attacking, dribbling and covering ground across the middle third. Sky Sport describes him as a player for Inter’s present and future, while a move for Ademola Lookman has been shelved under the club’s revised recruitment approach.

A profile built for growth

Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine and raised in a footballing family, Diouf progressed through PSG’s academy and the INF Clairefontaine before making his senior breakthrough at Rennes. He made his Ligue 1 debut against Neymar’s PSG in May 2021.

A loan spell at Basel followed, where he scored a memorable solo goal against Fiorentina in the Conference League before earning a permanent €5.5m move. Lens then paid €14m to bring him back to France, where 68 appearances across two seasons preceded Inter’s move.

Diouf’s age, physical profile and room for growth align with the directives attributed to Oaktree. His signing also gives Chivu another option in the attacking phase, reflecting the coach’s request for a midfielder able to carry the ball and operate across the pitch.

Diouf has yet to make his senior France debut despite representing the country from Under-17 level through to the Olympic team. Sky Sport notes that performing well under Chivu at Inter is the route toward earning that call-up.
