Vitiello: Milan need top four or ‘things will get complicated’ – what the accounts say

Last season, AC Milan recorded a loss after three straight years of profits and Antonio Vitiello has looked at what must change.

Recording a loss last season was not an issue for Milan really. They’ve not had a substantial turn around in finances and after their profit recordings, they’re only down €11 million. All in all, it could be a lot worse.

However, the loss hasn’t been helped by the Rossoneri themselves. Ultimately, the failure to record a Champions League finish had an impact on their finances and whilst this was a given, it’s been a reminder of the importance of a top four finish.

Vitiello looks at the books

This morning, Vitiello wrote an editorial piece for MilanNews, looking at the accounts, and he’s specified why the Diavolo need to return to the Champions League.

“After three consecutive profitable years, AC Milan closed the 2025/26 financial year with a loss of €24 million. This isn’t a huge figure, and it’s still manageable considering the team hasn’t competed in the Champions League for two years in a row.

“Two years without the Champions League were also offset by the departures of several key players, but this season, after the summer investments, a Champions League qualification is a sure bet.

“The Rossoneri will need to finish in the top four; otherwise things will get complicated again, even financially. This would be not only a new disappointment from a sporting perspective, but also from an economic one, with significant consequences for the investment phase.

“Nevertheless, the club closed the 2025/26 season with €464.6 million in revenue, maintaining levels close to those of the last two record seasons: +1.7% compared to 2023/24 and -6% compared to 2024/25.”

Again, there’s no danger after this year of the club coming under financial strain – in fact, Gerry Cardinale is expected to continue investing – but things could be tough if they miss out of Champions League football this season…
